Best game level ever?

The Death Star run from the original X-Wing was all sorts of epic, as your ship goes in the trench and then triples its velocity! Epic!
Yeah, loved the Death Star levels in X-Wing, including the laser tower clearance level and the preceding massive space battle.

I also have a soft spot for some of the other X-Wing levels, including the training mission in an A-Wing where you have to fight other Rebel fighters in an arena-like mission.

And of course, for me the single best moment from TIE Fighter:
"Enough of this charade, Gamma 1 is the Emperor's stool pigeon! Gamma 2 and 3, destroy Gamma 1 now!"

Yes! That was completely awesome. I loved the campaign against Harkov. I don't think I was ever as good at any space combat sim as I was at TIE Fighter. Shields? We don't need no stinking shields!

I always thought it would be totally badass if an arcade somewhere had rigged up TIE simulators running a multiplayer version of TIE Fighter. You get 4 or 5 people in adjacent sim cockpits, load up a game, and instantly become the most badass TIE squadron ever.

Either that, or a version of the game that lets you set things up strategically in addition to fighting tactically. Sort of the Wedge Antilles role: You're given an objective and available resources, and you set up the jump-in locations and times.....then play it.

That part of COD4 is cool, but it's pretty lame that because of the story, you can't do anything except shoot the guy's arm off, no matter how good your shot is.

True, but the atmosphere and suspense more than make up for that bit of scriptedness.

The shoe level from Super Mario Bros. 3. I loved that shoe. I've been hoping for it to reappear for almost two decades now.

The final Hell's Kitchen mission in Deus Ex. For whatever reason(s), I enjoy the hell out of it. There actually isn't a mission in that game I don't like, including this:

The final part of mission 2 (the warehouse district) from Deus Ex
I fucking hated that entire mission! I quit playing the game for quite a while because of it.
The thing I liked about that final segment was that you could choose very different paths to the final goal (and in one path you could still choose to go one way or another still).
That's one of the best aspects of the game, though - there are so many ways to do every level; even the relatively straightforward missions offer a number of approaches. :bolian:

The last "level" (if you can call it that) of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 is fantastic as well. Bloody intense, all the way from the Strider fight to the ending.

Don't know about best but some I found particularly memorable:

  • Ocean House Hotel from Bloodlines; though it's only good the first time through, and only if you really get into the whole atmosphere and spirit of the game.
  • The deck you start on in System Shock 2; Medical/Science I think. Scared the hell out of me the first time I played it.
  • The first few levels of Quake; had a "tightness" of design that later levels lacked, I think.
  • Wild Territory from Stalker. Really nice design, in my opinion, with a number of quite different spaces and routes through the map. Best experienced with the Oblivion Lost mod. Nothing quite like desperately running from a massive pack of mutants in the hope of getting to that ladder before the bloodsuckers and pseudo-dogs rip you to shreds.
  • The Yantar lab, also from Stalker. It has zombies and a giant brain in a jar. What more can you ask for?
  • XCOM terror sites. At night. With Chryssalids. Bad memories...

The final one, is that the one where Jo-Jo threatens Mr. Renton? What do you normally do:

1) Kill Jo-Jo and watch Sandra go storming off, never to be seen again (until you randomly encounter her at a gas station).
2) Give Mr. Renton a gun and help him kill Jo-Jo, and watch Sandra reconcile with her father.
3) Kill Mr. Renton and/or Sandra for giggles.
