Best Ever NON-Genre Action Film

The James Bond movies don't count?

I thought about mentioning a Bond film or two, but, to me, the Bond films tread a very fine line between action and fantasy, so I thought a lot of people might consider them "genre."

But they sure do have some GREAT action sequences.

The Bourne trilogy, hands down.

Word. No one has a better foot chase or car chase than the Bourne movies.

This thread reminds me, I need to see Hot Fuzz...

Yes you do! It was utterly brilliant. I'm anxiously awaiting for The World's End, the third "installment" in Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost's "blood & ice cream cornetto" trilogy.

EMH: Hot Fuzz is much better than Shaun

Yes it is. It took me a few viewings of Hot Fuzz to confirm this (I think I have seen that movie like over ten times now!) but it's one of those things where it all mixes together brilliantly: Wright's writing, directing, Pegg & Frost are on top of their game and deliver on-note performances, everything just meshes to deliver one of the best action comedies in a long while.

Con Air
The last half-hour is almost wall-to-wall explosions.

Die Hard
Needs no introduction.

Die Hard 2
Underrated. Almost as good as its predecessor. Far superior to the 2 sequels after it.

El Mariachi
Robert Rodriguez made this Spanish-language action movie for only $7000. It's about a young mariachi who comes into town and is mistaken for a murderous gangster who carries his guns in a guitar case. The budgets got higher, the production values got slicker, and Antonio Banderas replaced Carlos Gallardo in the lead role in the 2 English-language sequels--Desperado & Once Upon a Time in Mexico--but the concept was the strongest in the first film.

Hot Fuzz
More comedy than action but excels at both. I'm glad to see it's getting so many good mentions here.

A Knight's Tale
Maybe more of a sports movie than an action movie but is filled with plenty of exciting jousting scenes. A lot of critics hated it because of its blatantly anachronistic soundtrack. (The movie opens with Queen's "We Will Rock You.") But it's just fun!

Mission Impossible III
All of the Mission Impossible movies are fun but J.J. Abrams brings a surprising amount of energy, emotion, & cast chemistry to the 3rd entry.

Reindeer Games
Ben Affleck, Charlize Theron, & Gary Sinise in an endless string of double & triple crosses involving an ex-con pretending to be a different ex-con being forced to give inside information for a casino robbery at a casino that he's never been to before. You got all that?;)

Rush Hour 2
Jackie Chan & Chris Tucker have very strong chemistry. Plus, this was Chan back when he was still in his prime (something which passed between here & Rush Hour 3).

Shanghai Knights
SEE above. Just replace Chris Tucker with Owen Wilson.

Speed
Almost as exciting as Die Hard.

Okay, I just finished Hot Fuzz. That was fucking hilarious. :guffaw:

"I feel like I should say something smart."
"You don’t have to say anything at all."

"Have you ever dived sideways through a door, whilst firing two guns?"
"No."
"Have you ever dived sideways through a door, whilst firing one gun?"
"No."

Another great gag is the sergeant asking Angel for advice all the time and then suddenly showing the tactical know-how...

"My, my, here come the fuzz..."

^Greatest thing about Hot Fuzz is really just how well put together it is. Extremly solid script, great performances, FANTASTIC editing and pretty damned decent cinematography and sound work also.

As for going back on topic on that note, it's gotta be Die Hard. The thing it has in common with hot fuzz is it's extremly solid script and it till works today because of that.

Hot Fuzz is insanely quotable.

"Narp!"

"Nobody tells me nothin'."

"FASCIST!"

"Hag!"

"SWAN!"

"Stop, or the ginger-nut gets it!"

"You're a doctor, deal with it!"

"Yeah, motherfucker!"

"Punch...that...shit!"

"You're off the fucking chain!"

And the list goes on and on. :D

The Bourne Trilogy.
Die Hard.
Speed.
Mission Impossible.
And the often ignored S.W.A.T.

Yes, okay, I'm probably the only person who is going to vote for S.W.A.T. but I loved it. It's one of the few non-genre action movies I ever found genuinely exciting.

Nitpick mode: it's "Bullitt"!
^I just bought that on Blu-Ray, blind purchase but everyone says it's great.
I found it okay, I think Dirty Harry is a much better film from the same period. HOWEVER. Bullitt has one of the greatest car chases in the history of cinema. I watch that chase from time to to time, definetly worth the buy just for that.
