Best Dr Who cliff hangers

I think with the Stolen Earth, however much I knew about Tennant not leaving and the specials, a tiny part of my brain did wonder if RTD had basically pulled the greatest conjuring trick ever in convincing us that Tennant wasn't going anywhere then regenerating him.

Obviously I'm glad that didn't happen as I doubt he'd have regenerated into Smith...

As for cliffhangers, Andozani has a couple, even before the end of episode 4, the Doctor and Peri being shot, and the Doctor basically slamming a spaceship into the ground because he doesn't have time (or space) for a proper landing.

"So we play the contest again, Time Lord..." is a good un as well. Doomsday and Utopia are good, but kudos to the Ninth Doctor at the end of Bad Wolf.

Dalek "But you no no weapons, no defences, no plan?"
Doctor "Yeah and doesn't that just scare you to death."

Exactly. My response was along the lines of, "No. No, they can't be. They wouldn't do that, would they? Come on, stop shitting me. Seriously? Are you actually doing this? OMG for realz?"

And even if you did know for absolute certain that Tennant wasn't leaving, everyone still knows what a regeneration means. It still leaves you thinking, "Holy crap, how is he going to get out of THIS one?"

.

The Stolen Earth, Utopia, Army of Ghosts, Silence in the Library and The Sound of Drums all had very good cliffhangers IMO

Exactly. And the fact there was no 'next time' trailer only added to the possibility they'd really done it.

I don't remember the specifics, because it's been so long since I've seen The Aztecs Hartnell Serial, but, I seem to recall at least two of those Cliff Hangers were pretty danged good.

Well, the WORST cliffhanger has to be Sarah Jane versus the gently sloping incline of death from The Five Doctors. :P Followed more serioulsy by "I really think this might be the end!" in that Colin Baker episoe from the Trial season.

Best, I think modern Who has it much better than the classic corny "You WILL ALL DIE!!" cliffhangers tended to be. I do like the end of Bad Wolf, when Eccelston had be literally cheering with his speech. Gosh darn them Daleks all to heck!

Nah, those are the second and third worst. I've already mentioned the worst. ;)

I also have to admit a fondness for the Human Nature cliffhanger. Not something that knocked you off the couch, but it definately had a very classic Who feel.

The thing is though, that was never supposed to be a cliffhanger. Five Doctors was originally made to be shown all in one go. Some genius later decided to cut it up so they could slip it into the syndication package.

"Explain your self"
"I said no"
"What is the meaning of this negative?"
"It means no"
"But she will be destroyed"
"No because this is what I'm going to do, I'm going to rescue her. I'm going to save Rose Tyler from the middle of the Dalek fleet and then I'm going to save the earth and then just to finish off I'm going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky"
"But you have no weapons, no defenses, no plan"
"Yeah and doesn't that scare you to death?"
"Rose?"
"Yes Doctor?"
"I'm coming to get you"

The Deadly Assassin part one, it was awesome seeing the Doctor's vision come true, I saw the show five days aweek so I couldn't wait for part two 24 hours later.

The Mind Of Evil part five, seeing Mailer with his gun trained on Jo and then seeing the gun go off and I saw it in omibus format but I still knew that was a cliffhanger and it was incredible.

The Stolen Earth, I loved it even though I knew the Doctor wasn't really going to regenerate.

The Almost People, that was a great shocking ending far better than what we got in the next ep.

That makes sense as that scene wouldn't make me desperate to tune in next week.

did anyone else like the end of time one. It's the only part of the ep I really enjoyed.

The ending of part one is great. Shame the Timelords were mere window dressing and barely seen. I still think the conversation between the Doctor and Wilf is the best bit of that ep though.
