George Sr. was clearly a decent guy AFTER the timeline divergence, so I'm sure he was one BEFORE it as well.

Based on Sam assessment he seems like a hard father to please, George looks down on his career path because his son, Sam is not command track. Kirk is the favored one. Kirk senior sounds like a human Sarek.

We don't really know for sure if their dad did look down on Sam's career. Sam could just as easily be seeing something that isn't there. Wouldn't be the first time a child misinterprets a parent.

Until we see George Kirk in SNW, we can only speculate.
