Fleet Captain
Similar to Emperor_Tiberius's poll about the regeneration stories, Not sure if crossover's the right word, but what I mean is, companions that travel with two incarnations of the Doctor, before and after his regeneration. In some cases such as Tegan, Nyssa, Peri etc. I think the new companions were introduced to help ease in the new Doctor (with some continuity to the previous incarnation) or be his main companion, as they appear in the last or next to last story. Other times it's not as planned, but the companion sometimes goes through some character changes as they adapt to the new Doctor, such as Sarah Jane, Rose, Clara...or in the case of Mel and probably Ben, Polly and Adric, the old companion doesn't quite gel with the new Doctor and is written out, replaced with a new companion more suited to the current incarnation (Jaime, Ace etc.)

I'm not really including Grace, Jack or the Brig and UNIT though. Kind of forgot.

For the classic series,

I believe Sarah Jane is the most even in this bunch with almost balanced number of episodes with the 3rd and 4th doctor. Adric was in Tom Baker's last 5 stories, Nyssa the last 2 and Tegan just in Logopolis. Mel only had 6 episodes (2 stories) with the 6th doctor.

For the modern series, Rose has the most episodes with 2 different doctors.

Sarah Jane. I think she was the best companion of Classic Who, and certainly one of the most beloved. She worked well with The Doctor, regardless of which incarnation she was facing.

Apart from Sarah Jane who is clearly the winner.
Jamie, although his time with six was brief

Question. At least when it came to the classics, were companions deliberately introduced late during a doctor's run to be a "familiar face" for a new doctor? Sometimes this seems to be the case (Peri), while others not so much - like Nyssa. She was only supposed to appear during the Traken incident, but they kept her on for Doctor 5, and who I beleive was a far better companion for #5 than Tegan (who never really appealed to me).

I voted for Sarah Jane (of course), but Rose and Clara work well with their two respective doctors.

Pretty much how I feel. Special nod to Clara because, IMHO, she's really come into her own with her second Doctor.

Clara been rather bland with Capaldi's Doctor and it took her a long time to adjust to him, unlike Sarah Jane, Ben, Polly or Tegan. In the end Clara needed a call from the previous Doctor to help her accept the new one.

^See, I found her bland opposite Smith. The call from Smith in Breathe was just a silly story device by Moffatt, IMHO and I don't hold it against the character.

I didn't like the long time taken by her to adjust initially but as the season went on, it just felt like it made her - and him - more of a rounded individual and less of a plot device. YMVWD, of course.

I voted for Sarah Jane Smith. I'd put for a close second a tie between Peri and Rose. Also, I'd put Mel and Clara as tied for last :klingon: That probably doesn't mean much because, of that list, I've really only seen stories with SJ, Peri, Rose, Mel and Clara, but I think, even if I'd seen stories with the others, I'd still keep the ones I mentioned on the top and bottom, respectively.

I really like Sarah Jane and Clara is my favorite NuWho companion by a country mile, but I voted for Clara because I figured she'd have fewer votes.
