Best "CHEAP" space movie

Okay how about Outlander with Sean Connery. or better yet Saturn 3 with Kirk Douglas and Farrah Fawcett.

Wow..I just watched SATURN 3 a couple weeks past. And I didn't know it but Harvey Kietel's voice was dubbed the whole way through. I only found out about it after I saw the movie and went on line to see if i could find any background info on this turkey....

But I would still rank this dud above STAR TREK NEMESIS. I am starting a list of SCIFI movies that I prefer to Star Trek Nemesis. And as bad as Saturn 3 is? It ranks above NEMESIS...as does a new move on my "BETTER THAN NEMESIS" list; GODZILLA vs MEGALON..

I wouldn't call Outlander "cheap". The FX work was on par with the big dogs of it's day.

Honestly, I wouldn't consider ANYTHING that made it to the big screen "cheap".

"CHEAP" is the grade Z stuff that gets made for the Sat afternoon cable slots and overnights.

I saw part of one when I was channel surfing once. It was supposed to be a "cyberpunkish" techno thriller set 100 years from now. The only "futuristic" things on the set were the costumes for the police (They got hold of the Shock Trooper uniforms from V and died the red/orange parts black.) They couldn't find or couldn't afford the weapons to go with it, so they used cheesy looking Italian police SMGs.

Don't ask me what it was called; I didn't stick around to find out. It had to have been filmed in either Hong Kong or Singapore or Taiwan though, since the entire cast was oriental.

I think you guys mean Outland.

Outlander is about a spaceman that crashes into 6th century Norway and helps a village of vikings defeat a monster.

Both awesome films.

Glad to be of help.

I agree it was definitely not cheap though, it was actually a groundbreaking special effects movie.

Hi all! I got here late, so I havent read any of your posts, but I would like to reccomend OUTLAND as best ''cheap space movie. I saw it not to long ago and it holds up okay, Althou I thought it had a rather ''anti-climactic'' end. To tell the truth I woulden't mind seeing this remade ''or'' reimagind, maybe by Chris Nolan, or Pual verhoven.

I haven't seen Outlander..will look for it. But I did like OUTLAND. Pretty much a HIGH NOON ripoff..but still good..

Rob

I think it's a great film too, as apparently so do many others.

I love downbeat space movies that have a very isolated, lonely and desperate feel to them, and Outland is an excellent example of that.

You ought to start a thread and see how many 'isolated' movies you could come up with on this board. Silent Running is like that, I guess. Definatly ALIEN...

Rob

^ My favourites tend to start out with just a few people too.

That's a good idea, and yes Silent Running is just the sort of thing I mean. If you can get over the weird square dwarfbots it's a great film

I've actually spent plenty of time looking for and obtaining a good number of these sorts of films, there can only be a few i'm missing out on. When I get time I'll get a list together of what I already have and then post a thread.

I'm heavily into sci-fi noir as well, always on the lookout for ones I have not seen, but it's not really a very large genre unfortunately.

sci-fi noir...wow...what movies do you qualify as that? Dark City? That movie has the noir feel to it..what others can you come up with?

Rob

Yes, Blade Runner and Dark City are the real big boys, off the top of my head other Sci-fi films with noir elements of varying degrees are:

The Thirteenth Floor
Gattaca
Imposter
12 Monkeys
Alphaville
Strange Days
Until The End of the World

Amongst others.

Ooh I'd forgotten Strange Days. OH fell in love with Angela Bassett when she called him a 'pussywhipped mother....'

We could have a parallel list of fantasy noir too. I think the Ninth Gate deserves a mention somewhere.

Hey...hats off to you. I have seen most of those movies, except for Imposter-AlphaVille, and you're right..Noir scifi movies are, generally, pretty good. I will look for Aphaville and Imposter...

I really liked 12 Monkeys, and I think it contains one of Brad Pitt's best acting gigs. Gattaca is just, wow, out there and I liked it because of it. What about the Fly (Goldblume)? I know...maybe not...but it has that kind of noir feel to it.
