The Sisko.

Agreed.

I went with Sisko. We didn't see enough of Kirk's career to make a judgement, IMO. But we did see enough of Picard to know that Starfleet never really considered him a valuable tactical asset. He allowed himself to be captured, to become a tool of the Borg, and killed 16000 Feds and destroyed many ships. One could even say that the greatest tactical moment in Picard's life was when he was a Borg.

Sisko was a tactical asset, even though the Feds didn't like his association with the Bajorans. He could whup Picard's butt in any scenerio, Defiant included! He drew up the plans to retake DS9. He was involved with the counter-invasion of Cardassian space.

So...I go with Sisko.

Rob

Well, Picard did invent the Picard Maneuver, which was required reading at the Academy (I think the concept of it is bullshit, but that's not the point). Don't forget that Sisko's attempt to retake DS9 as originally drawn up would have failed without help from both Klingons and the Prophets. I think people give Sisko too much credit for military tactics and don't give Picard enough (at the same time, I think people give Picard all the credit in diplomatic areas without giving Sisko any. Sisko did a great job treading a very fine line in a difficult diplomatic situation for years at DS9).

Sorry, but Jean-Luc "I surrender" Picard ruined his so called legacy when he murdered all those people at Wolf 359. There is absolutely no reason that should have happened. He showed his stripes that day.

And when the Earth was attacked, where was the Captain of the flagship of the Federation? Wearing a wig, and throwing a party for a bunch of midgets.

Sisko, hands down, is better. He is seen, in several episodes, planning and counter planning with either Ross or Martok. Where is Picard when the Borg attack in FC? Doing comet scans at the neutral zone because StarFleet doesn't trust his ability.

(It was amazing how they got to Earth in just five minutes. That Borg ship must have ran out of gas!)

Rob

Oh yes, being assimilated definitely leaves you in total control of yourself. I'm sure Picard was fully cooperative during "Best of Both Worlds". When Earth was attacked, Picard WAS there, the TNG novels of what they doing during the War says so. INS happened after the war ended but before the treaty was signed so he didn't have any war to fight in.

Where was Picard during FC? He was heading towards Earth where he SAVED Starfleet.

As Q would say in TNG: Tapestry, "Jean Luc Pick-ard."

He has many great leadership charcteristics which make me to consider him as the best captain. I also like his stiff and uncomfortable attitude around children.

Depends on the situation, to wit:
  • If it's a sensitive diplomatic matter, requiring subtle give-and-take—at turns silk and steel—I'll take Picard
  • I don't know enough about Pike to comment
  • If I'm surrounded by Romulan battle cruisers (and the Klingons aren't gonna bail my ass out, a la "The Defector"), Kirk's the man
  • Sisko gets the nod when I need divine intervention in extremis
  • When requiring a scientific answer, I'd probably go with Janeway
  • Archer would be my choice only if my pet gazelle were imperiled

Gazelles aside, Archer was pivotal in the foundation of the federation and Kirk's childhood idol. He's number 2 on my list.
I mean, Kirk had his share of goofy monologues.

James T. Kirk

But just because I prefer his charisma, I think Picard and Sisko are great Captains as well. Acher grew in seasons 2 and 3, and by season 4 we had a very good Captain.

Picard for me..although as a runner-up I'm also pretty partial to Janeway. Kirk or Sisko are both great for different reasons, I'd vote for them too if possible.:techman:

Wow! There's not a single vote for Captain Archer! That surprises me. (There's even a vote for Pike who was only seen three episodes!) Well, just for the record: Though I voted Sisko (with Kirk being a close second) I'd place him right behind those two. Then there would be Picard and Janeway.

Right Belar, I had to vote Kirk first. He is just the original. But Archer would be second for me (as I stated above) and Sisko third.
