Best Book for a Specific Character

Name an ST character, then a novel that, in your opinion, best showcases that character.

Ro Laren: "Here There Be Dragons".

Laren finds herself in more trouble in that book than in any TNG episode, and she gets herself out as only she can, with smarts, skill, and snark. In her dealings with mates on the Enterprise, as snarky and insightful as ever.

I just loved that book.

Lazy/weird choice but I love short stories...

Twilight's Wrath by David Mack in Tales of the Dominion War Anthology- Shinzon

Batgirl from Batman '66! And a crazy Orion woman on a 3rd season episode of Star Trek.

I was at a con 'dead dog' party, carrying a beverage and plate of snacks, looking for a place to sit.

Grace Lee Whitney and Yvonne Craig are sharing a table, and Whitney pats the empty chair to her left. "Sit", she said.

For a spell, I listen to them talk about their experience at this con, and old times. I think: "I'd be a hero if I were the only person who doesn't ask them about green bodypaint, Batcycles, or bridge bunny miniskirts."

I remember thinking that, though I don't remember saying it aloud. But I must've, because Craig laughed. "That's why we're here!" she said.

Yvonne Craig was so charmingly down-to-earth about her roles in '60s nerd television. About Batgirl, she said the casting just sort of happened. She was standing in the right spot at the right time, and someone knew she had the ability to kick a henchman in the jaw. She went on and on about Elvis.

This was one of those most memorable fan moments, and it happened the same way. I walked through a crowded room, and Yeoman Rand told me to sit down.

Haven’t watched that season yet. There is only so much camp I can take at a time.

But you said above that you have seen and disliked "the Garth episode" ("Whom Gods Destroy,") and that's the one that has Yvonne Craig as Marta the Orion woman. That's why E-DUB brought her up in the first place, as a redeeming feature of the episode.

Quite correct, Christopher, but Ms. Craig's performance wasn't the only redeeming feature of that episode. Steven Ihnat"s performance as Garth, the whole "queen to queen's level three" thing, the Kirk-on-Kirk action. On the whole, I personally regard "Whom Gods Destroy" as one of the better Season Three episodes. YMMV, of course.

WGD would be a better episode if not for that stupid bit about Garth inventing a chemical explosive that's somehow more powerful than antimatter. Although I choose to take that boast merely as a symptom of Garth's insanity, given that the explosive didn't seem all that powerful when it was used.

Also, how you can "teach" a human being to shapeshift -- and to shift his clothes along with him -- is an abiding mystery.

Mainly I just wish that later productions had followed up on what this episode established about Garth being the greatest Starfleet captain of his generation. Later shows treat Kirk, or sometimes Pike, as the only 23rd-century captain who's remembered, but Garth was Kirk's inspiration, so logically he should be famous too. Discovery missed an opportunity last season when it had Saru ask the computer for a list of great captains and the graphic artists didn't include Garth among them. DSC is set after Kirk graduates, and he studied Garth's achievements in the Academy, so surely Garth's greatness was already established by the time of the show. And he doesn't go mad until mere months before WGD, more than a decade after DSC.

"Whom Gods Destroy" is a fun and colorful pulp adventure. Beside having Batgirl (!) play a green Orion dancer, that episode also featured the return of the Andorians and the Tellarites, whom (I believe) we hadn't seen since "Journey to Babel." So that was exciting too, back in the day.

Yeah, the super-explosive gimmick is silly and unnecessary, but the ep has lots of old-fashioned fan appeal. I always enjoyed it as a kid.

I wasn’t referring Trek when I said that I can only take so much camp.
