I feel like I'm the only one who thinks Gladiator is an okay movie that's really overrated. I like Ridley Scott, and I guess I like Logan's work for the most part (whatever it is he did for the movie), but overall I thought it was disappointing and not nearly as character-driven or as epic as I thought it would be.
When I was doing an article on the movie before it came out, I came across a synopsis of an earlier draft that was truly epic in scale, with act 3 playing like SPARTACUS after the slaves break out and form into an army. When i saw the movie, I kept feeling like I was seeing the made-for-tv ripoff of a big feature, despite moments of grandeur (due in large part to conceptual work by Sylvain Despretz.)
I think the score helps it a lot, but I haven't rewatched it in a decade.
