Benjamin L. Sisko: a black “Captain Kirk”

Aquehonga

Fleet Captain
Both J.T. Kirk & B.L. Sisko have the same speaking style. Or is it a speech impediment:confused:

Captain Kirk: “Yes. Mis. Ter. Spock. Tell. Doc. Ter. Mick. Coy I`. ll. Be. In. Med. Ikkul. After. Well. Come. Ing. Dee. Nob. You. Lin. Am. Bass. Uh. Dur. P'Atsch Add. Immz. Uh. Bored. ”

Captain Sisko: “Why. Hell. Oh. My. Illz! Has. There. Been. Any. Dough. Min. Yin. Act. Ihv. It. Ee? I. Am. Busy. Now., En. Trench. Ed. Read. Ing. Cap. Tin. Ape. Rill's. Logs. ”

Shatner & Brooks talk in stop-motion. Rank`n`Bass form of speech.

Was this a factor in Avery Brooks being cast as Commander Ben Sisko?

Perhaps not consciously necessarily. But very possible unconsciously or subconsciously (?)

In my opinion, any one of these actors would've been much better casting as
Commander/Captain Benjamin L. Sisko:

Eamonn Walker, Clarence Williams III, Dennis Haysbert, Ernie Hudson, Reginald Vel Johnson, *James Earl Jones, *Larry Fishburne, *Danny Glover, Ron Glass, Chi McBride, Billy Dee Williams, Tim Reid, Carl Weathers, Bill Duke, Joe Morton, Bernie Casey.........,................. YOUR turn(s) now fellow aficionados>

*I think J.E. Jones, L. Fishburne & D. Glover would've been very hard to get, nevermind being able to keep as Sisko.

I just don't see it, Aquehonga. They are such different people, and I don't think their speaking styles are very similar at all. Sorry.

I'm not seein' it either.

And further, I'm perfectly happy with Avery Brooks. Was then. Still am.

Shoot...no one had even heard of Dennis Haysbert back in 1993. He only became really popular as a result of 24, which was a full decade later.

But we sure as hell had heard of Hawk.

I was excited about some possible Hawk-like action. Didn't happen til later in the series...but in the end, I got what I signed up for with Avery Brooks. :)

....And this also comes off as insulting Shatner, too.

His delivery was something I enjoyed.

That's how they talk dude(s)!

Its a blended curse & a mixed blessing:brickwall:

Its both an insult & a compliment simultaneously:hugegrin:

It is true Avery Brooks was once a man called Hawk.

Because of that it would've been groovy & appropriate to have the late Robert Urich a Very Special Guest Star on DS9 ala Spockwell on ENT later on (B&B blew that one:scream::mad: )

Stop-motion talking does have ic:cool:nic value, ala Shatner.

Sisko was no Kirk, if he were he would have been all over Kira and Dax.

But somehow I don't think Kira and Kirk would have gotten along.

^ If Kirk had made one of those sly lady's man moves on Kira, she'd have kicked his ass.

And before you say that Kirk was unbeatable, remember...this is the women who kicked Damar's ass.

^ LOL! True.

I had no trouble with Brooks as Sisko- he thought before he spoke, and I just liked him in general, and also still do.
If it had been Clarence Williams III- we wouldn't have gotten Ometi'klan as he was- which is totally unacceptable.
James Earl Jones and Danny Glover would have cost a fortune... and are a bit too old.

I think Kirk's voice was part of a thing of the time... those "dramatic" pauses as we feel now.

How would Tim Russ have been as Sisko?

Then Avery Brooks as Tuvok:confused:

Clarence Williams III played a Jem'Hadar:confused:

Forgot all about that!

As Marie1 said, backing up my *'s in my Thread Initiating Post, Jones & Glover (as well as Fishburne!) would've co$t a $mall fortune to get. Keeping them on would've been very expen$ive al$o. And the age factor, as Marie1 pointed out, especially re: Jones.

Thu$ my *wn re$ervati*n$!

I do see similarities in their acting style and their characters, Aquehonga. I've always thought Sisko was Kirk-like in that respect. Both characters do have tragedies in their lives, also. Sisko lost his wife and first great love, Jennifer, while Kirk lost his other great love, Edith Keeler. Both are men of action, have tempers, and kick ass. -- RR

And an additional thought: Sisko is like Kirk and Shaft, rolled into one. -- RR

Which is why every "which captian would win" poll almost always comes down to Sisko verses Kirk.

I don't like to use this to often but: FAIL!

I had to read that four times before I could make sense of it.

At first glance I thought your thesis to be:

Benjamin L. Sisko: A black Sheriff?!
