Benedict Cumberbach joins the cast

Fortunately I don't find Cumberbatch hot... and doubtless, definitely wouldn't when he's in full make-up. Made whatever changes to his appearance an actor might do, that last the months filming is happening. Probably why he's not adverse to taking a part with an action figure entailed. I mean, Eric Bana probably doesn't get stopped on the street too often for being Nero. He went with an extreme look and different accent than his own natural one.

I bet Benedict's going to be DECIUS, not the Romulan Commander from "Balance of Terror". Got that St'onn look to him hasn't he? Also that subordinate Romulan with powerful friends in high places. Different universe now, so in an early scene he likely kills his Commander (played by Ben Cross, as an in-joke for the fans) and then takes the Empire to war with the Federation. I can see that sort of cat and mouse game being played between Pine and BC. Vulcan refugees used as pawns in a chess match, as being totally different to Nero's urge to implode planets out of vengeance, with no goal beyond achieving that.

Probably some territorial fight over a Vulcan resettlement, or the same issues Romulans always have. An old score with Earth and bitching about having not exterminated humanity when they had the chance over a century ago. Maybe another reference to Admiral Archer in there... slipping a bit of continuity under the radar.

^ Two Romulan villains in a row? Not seeing it.
Maybe they've come to the conclusion Star Trek needs to stick with pointy ears and avoid foreheads for a while. Keep Klingons in reserve for that difficult third film idea. Maybe you're right, but I don't see any other race twisting the knife into the Federation over Vulcan's destruction, with as much delight.

Somewhere in a Paramount office: "Hey, that formular worked. Let's have another Romulan who is angry at Spock."

What I like about Benedict Cumberbatch is his voice. He has a sexy voice. I loved him in Amazing Grace and Sherlock.

If the villain is a Rommie, then people will get the idea that JJ Abrams is only interested in Rommies as villains. It's important for the second movie to show some breadth in subject matter, and Klingons will do that just fine. They may seem old hat to us, but Star Trek is mostly new to the new fans that Abrams has inducted into the franchise.

He does look a bit like Balok.
Someone want to 'shop that up, complete with wavery/ripply viewscreen effect?
Rough and ready quick 'shop:

If someone else wants to make with the ripply, be my guest.

:D

Well, if Ron Howard is ever chosen to direct a Star Trek Movie, you can bet Balok will be the Villain.
