Benedict Cumberbach joins the cast

Great news. I've only seen Cumberbatch in Sherlock, but he's fantastic in it. He's been getting a lot of high-profile roles lately. Good for him. :techman:

He would make a good alien. Vulcan or Romulan would keep the make up minimal.

Agree about not covering him up with too much makeup.

Could it be they are going for a race no one has ever heard of (or a human I suppose)?

On the over hand, Sherlock Holmes has appeared in Star Trek before, so ... .

Anyway, good choice. :techman:

When they were looking at Del Toro for the villain role and then a couple of other Latino actors I thought that Khan it but that doesn't seem to be the case. I also thought the big bad might be a Klingon due to the actors being looked at. Cumberbach doesn't look anywhere near enough to do Khan but he could do a Klingon. Not Kor or Kang but he looks lie he could do Koloth. Or it's an all new villain that he's playing.

Great Elephants! What alternate reality have I woken up in? this is fantastic, FANTASTIC news. Now I'm impressed.

Good news, I'm enjoying him as Sherlock and he was good in Amazing Grace as well.

I like both Clarke and Cumberbatch but it's worrying that we've seen 3 actors touted so far but only one actress. Considering the already large imbalance in the sexes that exists in the Big 7, these announcements are doing nothing to inspire me that they have made any effort to improve the ratio in the sequel.

No worries, i'm sure they'll throw in a couple of green chicks to balance things out.

I could see Cumberbatch as Trelane (which in turn means I could see him as Koloth, too). Trelane would be a good role for a theatrical actor.

As far as del Toro being Latino even having mattered in the first place as a clue to who the villain may be, del Toro was apparently the first choice of the Farrelly brothers to play Moe in their new Three Stooges movie. If he could play Moe Howard, then he could be cast to play anyone, including Trelane.

Not that I think it's Trelane. Just sayin' Cumberbatch looks the part and there's no reason why del Toro couldn't do it.

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. As long as it doesn't mean less Sherlock on tv, of course.

(Of course, my internal pessimist is pointing out that the last time Trek took a hugely talented Brit actor - Tom Hardy - and made him the villain, it didn't turn out so well. But I'm busy slapping the face off my internal pessimist)
