Ben and Desmond

Mr Light

Admiral
Admiral
A funny thought occurred to me. We're now four years into the show. Ben and Desmond have both been around since the second season.

Have these two ever appeared in the same scene together?
Are they even aware of the other's existence?

At the end of S2 when Des returns, Ben was already freed by Michael.
During S3, Ben was off with the Others.
At the end of S3, when Ben is the captive of the Losties, Des is over at the Looking Glass.
In 4X1 when Des returns to the group to tell them Charlie's dead, this is only part where they could have met, I can't remember, do they?
And then for the rest of S4 Des is on the Kahana and Ben is on the Island.

I know it's a big cast and they usually are in different groups, but is this a mere coincidence? Is there a hidden connection between them? Did Ben appear in Desmond's past and do something, and when they finally lay eyes on each other again in S5 there will be a shocking revelation?

Not to mention that in the future Ben will be trying to kill Desmond's girlfriend.

Good point. The only time they have been in the same scene together was when everyone was gathered around the plane wreckage during the first episode of this season. So they would have seen each other then, but it is never shown that they talked.

But... Ben must know who he is. He was living in the hatch for three years and it has been shown that Ben would use the Pearl Station to see what was going on in the Swan Hatch. So he must know all about Desmond just like he knows all about everyone else who arrives on the island. He must know that he was Penny's boy friend.

I had noticed that they hadn't shared a scene yet. It's possible they do have a connection and Desmond simply didn't get a good look at Ben since it was at night and Ben was a bloody mess (thanks a lot, Jack!). I have a feeling the producers do have something up their sleeve. Should be interesting.

I also think it's interesting to note that Ben and Desmond, who are two of my favorite characters (and I think this is the case for many others) have become so important to the show and yet they weren't even introduced until the second season.

The Swan station was monitored by the Others, so there's a definite chance that at least Ben is aware of Desmond's existence...

In the flashforward, doesn't Ben tell Sayid, "I used Desmond's boat" to explain how he suddenly appears in Iraq?

Wow, I didn't realize that Ben and Des had not even spoken or technically met. Which will make it all the weirder when Ben goes after Penny and one of those guys is going to end up dead (and I'm afraid it will have to be Des, the less important character :().

But on Kristen Dos Santos' site on eonline, I read an interesting theory that Charlotte could be Widmore's daughter. If so, maybe Penny isn't the one who has to die.

I think it's fair to assume that Ben knows who Desmond is due to the Pearl surveillance of the Swan. However, I recall the producers saying in one interview/podcast that the Others were NOT aware of the Swan's continued existence after the Purge, which seems completely inconsistent with everything seen on the show.

OMG I was thinking of starting this very same thread!!!!! In fact it had been at the back of my mind since Ben told Widmore he was going to kill Penny.

I think it's fair to say that even if Desmond never spoke to Ben, he definitely knew of his existence, though if he would remember what Ben looked like is anybodies guess.

I agree, it wouldn't surprise me if this became important later on, but then it could just be dumb luck. Someone needs to do a Facebook style "Friend wheel" of all the Lost Characters and see who's had scenes with who, we may be surprised.

That's my theory, I said it in the Charlotte thread here. I'm not letting Kristen take credit for it. :klingon:

I don't think that was auntiehill's intended point, rather that Ben would have to at least know of Desmond to make that false statement.

Okay, it's your theory then. :D Serves me right, believing her...
