Being Human-US Version Starts Filming

Syfy's version of the BBC series about a ghost, vampire and werewolf sharing a dwelling together (Friends with fangs, fur and ectoplasm

) has started filming in Montreal. The press release reveals cast and showrunners, plus new monikers for the re-imagined characters.

New York, New York – July 29, 2010 – Syfy's all-new drama seriesBeing Human, starring Sam Witwer (Smallville, Battlestar Galactica), Meaghan Rath (The Assistants), Sam Huntington (Cavemen, Superman Returns) and Mark Pellegrino (Lost, Supernatural) has commenced production in Montreal, Canada. Adam Kane (The Mentalist,Heroes) is Director and Co-Executive Producer with Executive Producer Michael Prupas (The Kennedys,Pillars of the Earth) and husband and wife Executive Producers/Writers Jeremy Carver (Supernatural) and Anna Fricke (Men in Trees,Everwood). Muse Entertainment is producing 13 1-hour episodes forSyfy.

Being Human, a re-imagining of the acclaimed UK series created by Toby Whithouse, follows three paranormal, 20-something roommates living in Boston – vampire "Aidan" (Witwer), werewolf "Josh" (Huntington) and ghost "Sally" (Rath) – as they struggle to hide their dark secrets from the world, while helping each other navigate the complexities of living double lives and trying to be human. Mark Pellegrino plays Aidan's charismatic but menacing vampire mentor "Bishop."

I like the idea of Witwer and Pelligrino as vampires so I'll give it a shot, even though this premise sounds like an emo drag and there are far far far too many "vampires trying to fit in while hiding their oh so dark secrets" shows nowadays. It's almost as annoying as the glut of sci fi cop shows.

Why can't they do a frakkin' space opera instead? It kills me that skiffy had such a great sounding premise in Revolution and they dropped it in favor of the garbage they've been churning out instead. All you have to do is watch The Gates to see the limitations of vampires and werewolves. We've seen it all and then some.

Aidan, Josh and Sally sound like perfectly good names that are popular in America. Such things do vary culturally, you know, and it's perfectly legitimate to change them. If people are going to insist on getting wound up about every picky little change from the UK version, this is all going to get very tedious, very fast.

Pius, Joshy the werewolf doesn't have the same ring as Georgie the werewolf.

I like the idea of the series, but the UK original never really grabbed me. It didn't balance its dramatic and comedic elements well at all, and came off as very muddled as a result, despite a solid cast. I'd like to see another shot taken with this premise, but I'm not sure if I trust Syfy to pull it off. Still, it's something to keep an eye on, I suppose.

Aw man! I looked at the cast and I am not impressed. I really enjoyed the UK version and most likely won't be watching this version. Bleh.

If they go for their usual candy-ass Eureka/Warehouse 13/Haven approach, I'll be bailing on this show pretty quickly.
