Well I know Deckerd is interested, so here's a discussion thread for Being Human.
If you missed it last night there's repeats tonight at 10:30 and 1:45, Wednesday at 3:40am and Friday 9pm.

I can't say I'm happy with the shift in tone towards comedy, most of which falls flat, but there seemed to be enough meat, especially towards the end of the episode, there for it to be a good show. So I'll give it a Good rating, especially in comparison to most of BBC Three's schedule.

Re: Being Human 1x01 BBC Three

I was really disappointed, I thought the pilot last year was amazing but the shift in tone and replacement cast has derailed it.

it felt like it was going somewhere interesting, now it feels like it's just going to retread all the old clichés.

I kinda felt the same at the start of the episode, but I felt it improved as the episode went on, maybe a lot of it is just hopeful thinking because of how much I enjoyed the pilot.

Re: Being Human 1x01 BBC Three

Guess no one's interested enough to make a weekly thread out of this so I'll just post in here my thoughts on episode two.
I'm finding the show fairly good, I still think they should have stuck with the tone they gave it in the pilot, but other than that it's holding up better than I expected. The characters seem to be working well enough and they at least seem to be attempting to keep the quality up. So another "good" again this week, I hope they keep it up, or improve some over the rest of the series.

Re: Being Human 1x01 BBC Three

I didn't realise there was a thread for this.

I'm enjoying it as well. I was hoping they'd maintain the tone of the pilot but it is a lot more light-hearted series than expected. Even so, I do like the vampire stuff and this week Dean Lennox Kelly put in a good shift to bring in some werewolf mystique.

My memory of the original cast isn't great, however - how do the new Annie and Mitchell measure up compared to the pilot?

I'm going to stick with it at any rate. There are a lot of worse things to do on a Sunday night in the Top Gear-less seasons.

Re: Being Human 1x01 BBC Three

I'm sorry but this isn't a patch on the pilot. Watched the first ep and some of the second before I just got bored. The storyline has been done before, better, and the sub-plot this week you could see the denouement from the beginning. Why can't they write something genuinely original, like Dexter, in this country?

Re: Being Human 1x01 BBC Three

I have to say, I'm really getting into it so far. It's only slightly shifted toward the comedic, with some better punchlines they'd have a perfect balance between drama and guffaws. Room for improvement on that front, but perfectly serviceable as it is.

I much prefer the new cast to the pilot's. Especially the ghost. I've loved Lenora Crichlow ever since Sugar Rush, so it's great to see her in another regular series.

The biggest downside? That so many of the regular cast were in Doctor Who. It's making me pine for Series 5!!!! :scream:

Dexter, while fantastic, is not exactly "Genuinely Original", it's based on the book(which is is better than), and has the occasional cliche and weak moments.
I think there is the talent in this country, it's just that there's no real "alternative" channels that produce shows. All the digital channels that make anything are owned by BBC, ITV or 4, and Sky are more interested in imports and tacky stuff.

Also it seems like there's a feeling that SF&F should be aimed towards kids, so what little we do get produced in this country tends to be a bit watered down. I wish there was more shows produced with the aim at a mature adult audience, SF&F or not, but far too much is lowest common denominator, or ITV "Detective with a difference" shows.

I pretty much agree, there's only a few of the "funny" lines that work at the minute, if they manage to get them right there wouldn't be much at all wrong with it. I think they seem to have dumbed down the vampire plot a little much though.
I'm with ya there on the Sugar Rush thing too. With a little improvement I think it deserves to last.

Re: Being Human 1x01 BBC Three

I thought last night's was good again. They keep slipping towards the dark in each episode, so at least the old tone is still partially there some of the time.
Nice to see a bit of an ongoing story building up there with Mitchell and him being tempted off the wagon, it's just a shame that he seems to be the only one with an overt arc going on.

Re: Being Human 1x01 BBC Three

^ Nice use of Skins there Bob.

I liked this one as well - it seemed to have a lot less humour this time. I'm getting used to the tone now.

We seem to have had a werewolf-episode and a ghost-episode so presumably a more vampire-focussed one isn't too far away.

Re: Being Human 1x01 BBC Three

I went with 'average', only because it was entertaining enough for my wife and I to continue watching, but we didn't really feel pulled into the show.

Of course only having one episode to go on doesn't help in a subjective scale ;)

There's been 3(4 if you count the pilot), which are still available on iPlayer, if you're interested.

Re: Being Human 1x01 BBC Three

Well I've only watched the first one and the thread was for 1x01 :)

Also...I don't have access to iPlayer except for BBC Radio here ;)

I know, I made the thread, but I decided to use this for the full series since there's not enough activity in here to warrant a weekly thread. Which is pretty much what I told Deckerd when she suggested it.

OK, I know they're up on bittorrent too. :p And I think it's a BBC America co-production, so I guess it'll be on in the US sooner or later.

Re: Being Human 1x01 BBC Three

I can't help but notice that only two people seem really interested in this thread so I might just jump in.

I watched some of the pilot last year and I wasn't really impressed, but then all the adverts started on BBC THREE about a vampire a ghost and a warewolf living in Bristol, which is where I currently live. With all the new programs that suddenly want to shoot in Bristol and apparently insult it (Skins) I thought I'd give it ago, forgetting about the pilot I saw last year.

And I was really impressed, I thought the first episode was a little dry but since then I really think the series so far as been excellent. I can't wait for Sunday when the new episode airs!

Re: Being Human 1x01 BBC Three

I never clocked that BH is set in Bristol. Now I'm going to be wondering if a Skins/Being Human crossover would be possible. Could the vampires really take on a man who can devour a whole boiling hot Pot Noodle in one go?

Re: Being Human 1x01 BBC Three

You don't watch the new Skins do you? I'm not a big fan of it personally and I prefer the old cast to the new (although that is a little biast because I know a couple of them). I'm starting to get in to it, but all it seems to be doing is bashing Bristol over and over again which gets annoying after a while.

And I'm sure a vampire could beat him, he can eat a Pot Noodle in one go, but he can't eat more than one strong chili in one go. Vamps can.

Re: Being Human 1x01 BBC Three

I can't say I've noticed much bashing going on, but then maybe there's references I'm missing?
I'm quite liking the new cast, but they do seem to be trying a little hard to establish Cook as the dominant personality.
