Beetlejuice is being rebooted

^ There's no strict meaning, although it's most recently been taken to mean starting a franchise all over again from the beginning; it really seems to have come into common parlance with Batman Begins and Casino Royale.

So in that context, it doesn't make a lot of sense to describe it as both a reboot and a sequel. But the term is so vague, that, as Sindatur says, it can just be taken to mean starting again - here, with a sequel.

Then they should have just said they're making a sequel. Using a meaningless buzzword just to sound ... "buzzy"... merely demonstrates a lack of intelligence.

Although it does confirm my thoughts on the collective IQ of Hollywood.

If you read the article it says it's a sequel. It's the title of this thread calling it a reboot, which it will most likely somewhat be. It's not like they're completely remaking/reimagining the original and then releasing a sequel. It will just be a sequel that will be loosely based on the original, with updated vfx and Helena Bonham Carter playing the Winona Ryder role, but all grown up! Oh an in 3D!

I actually don't mind the idea of a Beetlejuice continuation, but I frickin' hate the idea of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp being involved. Oh look, Johnny Depp is wearing white makeup and acting like a crazy person...what a new and exciting challenge for him!

True, they do say sequel first, but then they say reboot (which I quoted) without explaining what that means.

I just think the word is being thrown around so much that it's ceasing to mean anything at all.

No argument here.

But most of the articles I've read about this movie have used the term 'reboot' and it seems to be coming from the press release.

Sounds about right!

The film will not be a remake; the intention is to reboot it by advancing the storyline of the original
Explain how this constitutes a reboot.

"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

Ask the producers, "reboot" comes from them (presumably a press release or maybe directly from an interview).

Who knows what it really means. It probably means "we think calling it a reboot equals better box office."

Hey anybody remember what Star Trek XI was officially called (from JJ and crew, not filtered through any intermediaries)? Was that a reboot, remake, reimagining, or did they slap any term on it at all?

Because if that was called a reboot, and since it made big bucks, then it might be having a follow-on influence as a Hollywood buzzword.
It's the title of this thread calling it a reboot, which it will most likely somewhat be.

Read more carefully, I quoted the article itself (since it's the first post here, what else could I have been quoting?) - last line, first paragraph. The article is calling it a reboot, and that either comes from Deadline or from the producers themselves (I would guess the latter because the term is too vague for Deadline to take the initiative of defining it.)

I'm leaning toward them not having slapped a term on it.

It seemed like the perfect solution to bringing something new so you wouldn’t have to know anything about Star Trek but, if you did, you were literally following the continuing adventures of Leonard Nimoy’s Spock.

Leonard Nimoy’s plot comes off of the reunification plot that began in Next Generation.

^ If the studio was insistent that Depp appear, I could cope with him playing a rival ghoul to Keaton. I know a lot of people think Depp is over-exposed these days (and there's some merit to that) but the two of them trying to outdo each other would be something else.

Yeah, it's more a sequel that's just being made while specifically keeping in mind all of the young people that never saw the original, like Tron Legacy or Superman Returns.

I love that idea! Arnett would be perfect! He's got the voice and actually kind of resembles Keaton in some regard.

I have a softer spot for the cartoon than for the movie. This is one of those reboot/make/etc that doesn't really resonate for me positively or negatively other than a slight curiosity as to how they'll approach it.
