Beer IS better than water

Science says so. Spanish researchers have said that beer is better at rehydration after strenous exercise than water.

Professor Manuel Garzon, a member of Granada's medical faculty, made the finding after tests on 25 students over several months. Researchers believe that it is the sugars, salts, and bubbles in a beer that may help people absorb fluids more quickly.

The subjects in the study were asked to run on a treadmill at temperatures of 104F (40C) until they were close to exhaustion. Once they had reached the point of giving up, researchers measured their hydration levels, motor skills, and concentration ability.

Half of the subjects were given two half pints of Spanish lager to drink, and the other half were given just water.

Garzon said that the rehydration effection in those who were given beer was "slightly better" than those who were given only water. He also believes that the carbon dioxide in beer helps quench thirst more quickly, and that beer's carbohydrates replace calories lost during physical exertion.
Further proves Ben Franklin's statement that "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."

The article goes on to say that
researchers recommend moderate consumption of beer as a part of athletes' diets. "Moderate consumption" for men is 500ml per day, and for women is 250ml per day.

We always have a beer or two after a hockey game. Tastes good and goes down well. Woe unto the person who forgets the beer when it's their turn.

I like beer, but I'm going to call crap on this one. Alcohol is dehydrating, so there's no way this makes sense.

When I was in college I had to take two PE courses to graduate. The first one I took was tennis. But the second one was bowling, the only college course I ever took where there was a bar serving beer during "class".

When I played softball, we used to drink beer before the game. I guess we were just making sure we were well-hydrated. The times I played hockey were all outside on natural ice where the beverage of choice was brandy.

The alcohol content is beer is usually only 5-7%, right? I suppose it's conceivable that the other 95% is hydrating.

Yeah, it's bullshit.
Just like my kids, you youngsters think you know everything. You'll learn. Especially after you get married. :D

Look, I love beer. Beer was the foundation that western civilization was built on (I'm not making that up, it was a major reason for grain production and it purified water so it was safe to consume). I just don't see how something with 5% (or so) abv would beat something with no alcohol, so there would be no chance of dehydrating from it.

I'd be more impressed if they compared beer to the "isotonic" sports drinks rather than ordinary water.

I would say that something like a Microbrew would be all right for you after a workout because it contains a fair amount of protein and vitamins. So in that way, yes, it would be better than water.

But a protein shake would be better than beer.

I think these Spanish researchers have forgotten that beer still makes you pissed ;)

Benjamin Franklin also said not to ignore older women sexually, just put a sack over their head and regard them from the waist down.

 Yeah, that's not "moderate" around here, either. That's what happens when you sit down.

This can't be right. Sounds like something The Onion would put out.
