Beavis and Butthead / Music Videos returning to MtV

I must say, as excited as I am for new eps and commentaries, I think MTV should do right and air the unedited originals all over again in a realistic time and place. Better yet, they should issues complete Season sets on DVD, not just Judge's altered favorites. You'd think they'd make a pretty penny off those proper releases before dipping in the pot for a new series. But I digress!

First Futurama, now Beavis and Butthead ... is the 90s revival in full swing yet?
There has been one for quite sometime. On the tv front there was Melrose Place 2.0, 90210 etc. VH1 resurrected Divas Save the Music, Behind the Music, Storytellers etc. Lilith Fair came back this year. Now Beavis & Butthead.

The problem is you can't go back! Sure it is nice to see something from our youth back after pining away for it but then it turns out to be a horrible bastardization of the original to the point where you can barely recognize it beyond just the trappings.

I'd rather something end and not be brought back than have crap like Karate Kid, Bionic Woman, Knight Rider, Melrose Place, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Lilith Fair etc where some young idiot gets a hold of them and defiles them.

About the only successful arena I've seen resurrected for nostalgic purposes is action figure lines i.e. Mattel's Super Powers-inspired DC Universe Classics and Masters of the Universe Classics.

Sometimes B&B are on in a block in the wee hours on MTV2, so I'm glad to see it get a proper return. I've been watching on my Roku box recently. I do agree the adult animation in the 90s is better than a lot that's on now.

Yes we seem to have creative spurts of great story and writing, but it does only seem to last a season or two or get prematurely canceled. And why? Because reality crap is cheaper. Maybe MTV realized it can't rerun The Hills constantly? A lot of similar stupid animation followed Beavis and Butthead, but now this teen reality stupidity just has to go.

And music videos! how about that?! It frustrates me to know end how VH1 Classic cuts off the beginning and ending of videos, like the way radio used to fade a song out way too soon or talk over it. And they don't usually show anything before 1985 anyway! But a 90s revival? Weren't we just there? Did I ever really leave there? How long will it be before we get 'I Love the 2010s!'? 2015, we need the halfway mark.

If it makes you feel any better I haven't been privy to a whole lot in the 2010's that's worth loving.

I agree 2010 seems made up of pieces of every other decade with all the remakes and drivel.

Bah, Stray Cats! They were a thing unto themselves! Like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy swing is not the same as Glen Miller swing. Maybe Mad Men will make beehives and such popular again. I can't imagine the 90s being back already. In watching Buffy season One a few months ago, some of those clothes were just as bad as the 80s!

I don't think B&B will like a lot of new stuff. Maybe the more sexed up stuff or bad language, but most of the weird pop is not their style. Although I'd love to hear what they think of Axel Rose and Bret Michaels now! It would be neat if there was some sort of injoke with Butthead saying 'It's like 15 years have passed right before our eyes and the only way to know is by seeing how much music videos suck!'

Actually, Fox started the reality show nightmare. They were the ones put COPS on during the 1988 Writers Guild strike. As the show had no script and no narration, it was completely unaffected by the strike. It was the first network reality show.

Technically, I'd say that you're correct. For me though, The Real World is what really started it. I mean at least COPS was "reality". The Real World was the true father to all those manufactured bullshit drama shows. That's just how I see it though. ;)

I can't say, as a 46 year old, that I'm all that excited about the return of music videos though. I already know that 90% or more will be by artists I've either never heard of and will hate, or by artists I already can't stand. What I do look forward to is seeing Beavis and Butthead make fun of those artists like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. That shou'd be pretty sweet.

The Real World wasn't the shallow repetitive abomination that it has become in the last decade where it is so predictable in its casting and antics. Those first several editions were a nice look into early adulthood and all the issues they faced. Now it is just a pale imitation.

That's what I don't miss the videos anymore--because they are going to be featuring new artists that I can't stand. Now if they were to start airing old videos from the 80s and 90s I'd be thrilled but I know that won't happen so I'll be content with watching them on Youtube.

I'm not sure I ever remember feeling that way about The Real World, but I suppose it would be interesting to kill a lazy afternoon by watching a handful of episodes from different eras and noting the changes in style, casting and so forth. The Real World certainly does cover the main chunk of reality TV history.

To paraphrase Adm. Komack from the Star Trek episode 'Elaan of Troyius'-"This announcement will hopefully have and send clear ripples across the world, especially to Much Music in Canada!"*

*At least, that's what I hope, that maybe CTV Globemedia will hire back all of the staff they fired, and maybe bring back The New Music & Much West, and bring back full showings of music videos.

Music? On MTV? MTV hasn't aired a music video in so long that my cousins called bullshit when I told them that MTV stood for Music Television, also, found my stack of Beavis & Butthead comics today \m/

Music on MTV? I'm preoccupied with 1985!

I loved Dexter, Life on Mars (And Ashes), 24, Firefly.....It was a great period for television.
You listed two good shows canceled before the end of their first season, one show from pay cable, and one which while a success I didn't care for because it never really went anywhere.

You're thinking of the American remake of Life on Mars. I believe Kirkman1987 was talking about the original British version of Life on Mars. That series lasted 2 seasons and then spawned a spin-off, Ashes to Ashes, which recently completed its 3rd & final season.

Wow!! Mike Judge blew through all that King Of The Hill money already?

No. But he did remodel his kitchen on the hope that The Goode Family would last more than 13 episodes.:p

Yeah. Cops can at least make some claim to being, not a reality series, but a really trashy "documentary." But I'd like to think that, if you killed The Real World, then Big Brother would never have been born (or at least would never have come to the U.S.).

I'm looking forward to this, but I SO hope it goes better than the "Ren & Stimpy" relaunch from a while back.

Bump...

So.. Anyone else watch? I caught it on-line today and after wading through all the stupid Mtv commercials, I have to say it seems as though B&B haven't missed a beat...

I was pleasently surprised that it really just kind of picked up where it left off, rather than try to re-invent itself, ala the Ren and Stimpy reboot..

And Beavis even said "FIRE!"

I was quite impressed at how well they kept the show true to its roots, lack of good music videos aside (what was that zombie one with the kid all about??). The reality shows they added to make up for this worked just fine; I'm actually surprised MTV would let B&B make fun of their shows.

The only thing I thought was a LITTLE off was that B&B seemed to actually have a clue every now and again rather than being completely clueless participants. Then again, it's been years since I've watched the original so maybe it's always been this way.
