Doesn't the Stargazer get the Star Trek III look in The Battle? I thought it was neat attention to detail.

I like the TMP effect best. ILM's simplification of it in TWOK was understandable, but it seemed to get cheaper/lazier as time marched on:
TWOK TWOK TWOK
TSFS TSFS TSFS
TVH TVH
TUC
I also like the new warp effects they've used in the JJ films.
Agree, what was established in TMP before it got simplified with each film that followed. Agree, I also like the J.J. films warp effects too because it really has the feel of immense speed entering warp, during warp and exiting warp speed.

The TMP movie effects were the best. The simplification in TWOK was fine, not great but fine.

After that it just looked like someone had painted on cartoony streaks.

In my opinion, none of them *quite* got it right. I like the rainbow-y streaks of the TMP effect, but not the kaleidoscope happening outside the ship. (The rainbow-y streaks on the later films seemed a little more sloppy.) The stretch effect of the TNG era was fine, but never had the same "oomph" as the movies did. Also, the "luminal boom" in the TNG era always bugged me in that it was taller than it was wide. But I do really like the "stars" the fly by ships in the TNG era as they're in warp. (Which was also used in TUC.) I do really like the Kelvin Timeline warp effects, but only when *going* to warp—once they're *at* warp, with the tunnel and everything, it seems a bit too much for my taste. If there were a combination of all of those effects that I like, I think I'd be pretty satisfied.

If you look at the first TWOK warp, they it look like the Enterprise was 'bursting' through the few stars that were in front of it, kind of like a sped up version of just before when the end credits roll after Nimoys voice, that combined with the different sound effect and the dropping of the 'rainbow tunnel' is why I find the first TWOK warp scene the most satisfying. Every single one since then I've found to be a bit 'meh'

The TMP warp effects were cartoony. The two best warp effects up till now are the STNG effect and ST09. I'll see how the new Beyond warp effect looks like on an IMAX screen.

I liked the one in ST09 - they kept it simple, and the sound effect was excellent. Hated the effect from into Darkness, now that was cartoony. High hopes for the Beyond effect, I like what I see so far, but that's the ship at warp, I'll be interested to see the ship entering warp from impulse, if there is such a scene in the new film.

I only want the TMP ring for ring ships. TWOk's was the best at going to warp.

Beyond is best shwing a ship at warp. 09 Trek and Into Darkness looked like Star Wars hyperspace.

I actually like the Beyond effect better in the trailers. It's really cool looking, no doubt. But in context, it feels too passive and third-persony.

The TMP effect conveys a good gut feeling of speed, with it's multiple planes of movement (the stars coming towards us, the streaks flying past us, and the ship flying away from us). But I always felt the rainbow colors and regular pattern of the streaks looked very fake.

I think that the first TWOK effect has the best visual composition. The toned down streaks look more natural, the ship's light trail is more dynamically proportioned, and the stars flying past at the last moment make it feel more like you've sucked into warp as well, rather than just been left behind.

"Kirk. You do this and you'll never sit in the Captain's chair again."
"..... Warp speed."
"Aye sir. Warp speed."

BBSHHVRRRRRRRRRRSHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Despite my adoration for the stealing of the Enterprise scene I think this is one of the worst examples.

ILM sort of imitated the warp effect in TMP, the first time Enterprise entered warp in Wrath of Khan, but it's a brand new effect. As I recall, individual stars just sort of hurried out of the way, in that one, rather than appearing as long streaks of light.
This is my favourite. It takes away TMP's goofy circular tunnel of red, white and blue America Stars and replaces them with a really cool star warp and rush effect. It really conveys speed.

Not so fond of the warp streaks effect used at the end. STVI's version of the warp streaks gets my vote for worst warp effect, it looked like the Enterprise was leaving colourful streamers behind.

I can't help but love it. It's so raw and simple and in your face.

My problem is not with the scene, just the effect - I just looked like they lazily painted thick glowing streaks over the ship - and I'm not entirely convinced they were even done with the correct perspective. It would have looked better if it had been like the final effect from TWOK (where it's warping away from the crippled reliant) - which was the last decent warp effect in the TOS movies IMO. The rot started in the very next scene where you see the Enterprise warping away from the Genesis explosion.
