Beautiful & atpyical shot in The Corbomite Maneuver

Talos IV

Just watched The Corbomite Maneuver for the first time in awhile. There's a beautifully-composed shot in Act 3 that shows how much love and care was being put into the show early on:

The shot begins with Sulu and Scotty talking in the background. Then they go out of focus as Kirk and Spock continue the scene.

This was the only episode Joseph Sargent directed. Other directors subsequently did great things on the show, but nothing quite like this. As this was the first episode photographed by Jerry Finnerman, maybe he was eager to show what he could do?

It's almost dream-like filmmaking, really.

This is weird. I never noticed this flare/distortion before. I just checked on TrekCore and I could not find it there. This was an outstanding scene, visually and in terms of the acting and the music. Very well-written and executed. This was probably one of those scenes that set a precedent for many scenes like it that followed in TOS.

My favorite scene in this ep was when we're treated to a handheld shot of Kirk leaving the turbo lift and entering the Bridge for the first time. That shot probably helped to visually set the tone for the series as an adult sci fi drama.

Definitely a photo of the TV. Here is the same frame of the scene from the Blu-ray:

I watched "Corbomite" again only a couple weeks ago, and I too was quite impressed with this scene. The way they used the camera to move from one set of characters to another was very interesting. I imagine one reason we didn't see more of this kind of thing is because camera moves like that take a lot of time to set up -- what with needing to fix the lights so that all the actors are lit properly, and that they all had to hit their marks exactly on every take they did of the scene, etc -- and time is something that is severely lacking on television productions. ;)

Agreed. Director Joe Sargent seems to have taken the view that "Corbomite" was the first in production, and even though they'd already had "Where No Man Has Gone Before", he was doing the whole 'pilot episode' thing of introducing the audience to all of the sets using as many interesting camera angles as possible. So we get to see a lot of interesting views of things like the bridge and the corridors that would never quite be shot the same way ever again...

CM is interesting because there is much more of the ensemble feel than what ended up happening with the K/S thing taking over. Scotty gets much more to do here than he would for most of the rest of the first season, for instance.

And yes, Joe Sergeant gets a lot more angles and odd shots than some later directors - but the shoot was VERY long (for ST, that is), plus, since in all reality, it was a 'third pilot', they actually had a rehearsal day too! And Finnerman WAS going for broke - he was working on a show to show basis, it was his first work as a DP, so he was VERY nervous - losing his lunch every day - and so went for it all out.
