I read War & Peace back some time ago. I realize my memory isn't that great at this age, but I don't recall the "banging your friend's wife on the dinning table" scene from the novel. I'm thinking there was some "spicing up" for TV, here.
I really like Paul Dano; he's a very talented actor. However, I think he's totally wrong for Pierre. Pierre is supposed to be a big, clumsy bear of a man--someone who could wrestle a bear and who everyone thought as dumb as a bear, but who was secretly a sensitive, gentle (and a bit naive) soul. They've put Mr. Dano in heels and shoulder pads but he still looks like a small, fragile boy. He's just not physically right for the part. It's the Henry Fonda movie all over again. *shudder*
James Norton does a good job as the disaffected, more modern Andre but I'm afraid he's coming across as less "disenchanted intellectual" and more "emotionless dick." We shall see how this plays out. Andre was always my favorite character in the book, so I might be a tad biased here. I'm not sure you can really convey an internal struggle with nihilism and purpose on the screen and do it justice.
However, I made it through part 1 and I'm fairly pleased and entertained, so I'll stick with it. I want to see how they pull off the invasion and Andre's final scene.
