BBC Remaking Day of the Triffids

Well they just announced the cast.

Dougray Scott, Joely Richardson, Brian Cox, Vanessa Redgrave, Eddie Izzard and Jason Priestley star in The Day Of The Triffids, written by Patrick Harbinson (ER, Law & Order).
This epic, apocalyptic and futuristic two-part drama is a co-production between Power and Canadian producer Prodigy Pictures for BBC One.

Justin Bodle, Executive Producer, Power says: "We are enormously excited to have secured this stellar cast for The Day Of The Triffids. Together with its amazing effects and iconic locations, it will deliver the drama mini-series event of 2009."
Julie Gardner, Head of Drama, BBC Wales, adds: "The incredible cast lined-up for The Day Of The Triffids is testament to the quality of Patrick Harbinson's script. We hope audiences, both old and new, will be captivated by this modern take of John Wyndham's classic best-selling novel."
The confirmed cast list includes: Dougray Scott as Bill Masen; Joely Richardson as Jo Playton; Brian Cox as Dennis Masen; Vanessa Redgrave as Durrant; Eddie Izzard as Torrence and Jason Priestley as Coker.
Filming in the South-East of England until April for transmission later this year, The Day Of The Triffids is a Power production for BBC One.
The Executive Producer is Justin Bodle (Power); Stephen Smallwood is the producer (Murphy's Law) and the director is Nick Copus (The Summit, EastEnders).
Further Executive Producers are Jay Firestone (Prodigy Pictures) and Julie Gardner (BBC).
The Day Of The Triffids is part of the broad mix of dramas commissioned for BBC One for transmission in 2009 which includes Occupation, Small Island, Emma and Sherlock.

Best news I've heard in a long time. I've always been a fan of the book, read it more times than I can remember, and have the eighties-series on DVD. It's not bad, but a remake with HD quality sounds like music to my ears. I hope they'll also do "Night of the Triffids" , because that book was almost as good as "Day" (mainly because you can see what happens 25 years after the events in "Day".)
I'll be watching for it.
 
The 80's version of Triffids the BBC did was "my era" version. I watched it at the time and thought it was brilliant. I was so pleased when they finally put it on DVD. I think I bought it the second it was released, in fact! I imagine that I'll look in to see the new version when it's made, but, like Survivors before it, it will have to go some to beat the earlier version.
 
The '80s version was very nicely done, if a bit slow-paced. Downloaded it off Usenet years ago before it was ever released on DVD. In fact, I didn't know it had been. Wonder if there's a Region 1 version available?
 
Count me in on the loving-the-early-1980s-version camp. Scared the pants of me as a 10 year old.

I'm not in the least annoyed about another adaptation of the classic novel. Give me this over another doctors/ cops/ lawyers BBC or ITV identikit series. Wyndham's stuff has really stood the test of time, IMHO.

This is really a superb cast too - I wonder if Redgrave and Richardson will be playing mother and daughter. And a slight irony in seeing Brian Cox and Dougray Scott starring together. Had Scott not been delayed in completing MI2, costing him the role of Wolverine in X-Men, they would have ended up playing opposite each other in X2.

Great cast, and not really transatlantic as they're all British except for Priestly.

Much as I liked the Survivors remake, I really hope this is a lot better, the casting makes me think it might be.

I was a huge fan of the 80s serial, and own in on DVD, still pop it in from time to time. Bit twee in places (the amusingly middle class conversation about repopulating the world always makes me smile) but overall is quite gritty, and the Triffids were well done given the budgetry limitations. I like the 'look' of them and hopefully the updated version will look equally alien/thretening.
 
Hardly a spoiler, but if you owned a farm that farmed Triffids, and one of them broke loose, you'd probably want some kind of weapon that could kill a Triffid, without the danger of torching the entire crop. Possibly you would name such a weapon an "Anti-Triffid Gun" ;)

I was almost going to say the same. Great show. :techman:

And wamdue...not to worry. There are much BETTER ways to fight Triffids than flame throwers. That wasn't a spoiler at all. :)

I think the gun is seen briefly in the series, or at least alluded to. At one point I think bill wants to go tool up with anti Triffid guns. That's just a posed publicity shot.

Flame throwers are good, yes, but also potentially deadly to those using them as well :lol:

Plus they tend to run out of fuel!
