Tribute to Elisabeth Sladen: The Hand of Fear

It's been confirmed that BBC Four will be showing The Hand of Fear as a tribute to the late Elisabeth Sladen. The story was first broadcast in 1976 and marked Sarah Jane Smith's initial departure from the series.

It was the last time Elisabeth Sladen starred opposite Tom Baker (the Fourth Doctor) in Doctor Who and is possibly best remembered for its touching farewell scene, later echoed in The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Episode one of The Hand of Fear will be shown at 7.40pm on Monday 9 May on BBC Four. Episode two will follow immediately and you can catch episode three the next day on the same channel at 7.40pm. Again, it will be followed immediately by the next and final episode.

I tend to think of this episode when I think of Sarah Jane. In many ways it's integrel to my childhood.

Doubtful. Remember BBC America is not part of the BBC UK. It's a separate network (that's why it's not airing Torchwood this year). Other parties hold the broadcast rights to the classic series (PBS?) and Hand of Fear is on DVD anyway.

Mind you, it's on DVD in the UK, too, which makes this a bit of an odd choice, except I imagine for the fact it has the "don't forget me" conclusion. I'd have thought airing The Android Invasion - one of the only Sarah Jane stories yet to be issued on DVD - might have been a better choice. But you can't beat the ending to Hand of Fear...

Will they be adding anything to the broadcasts - retrospectives, etc? If they do, I wouldn't be surprised to see Hand of Fear tossed into a future Revisitations box set.

I sneaked Monday's two episodes onto the ex's Sky HD box and hopefully she allowed the other two to record tonight.

I allowed myself to watch a little of the first episode, it's got some nicely shot scenes of a malevolent Sarah Jane, marching around all evil in some cute dungarees

I think I was referring to the fact it's easily obtainable. It would have been the same as if Planet of the Spiders, very recently released to DVD, had been shown, whereas Android Invasion is one not a lot of people will have seen recently, yet it was still a good showcase for Sarah Jane.

Speaking of DVD, who wants to lay bets 2 Entertain has a Sarah Jane box set by the end of the year?

^Despite the fact it is on DVD only a small number of people will own it. It's a treat to be able to watch any classic Doctor Who on TV, I don't own any classic serial on DVD.

Well, I wasn't able to watch, so I bought the dvd. I would rather have caught the episodes on tv as there is something more special watching a transmission than a dvd.

So let's see, Sarah Jane worked with 3, 4, 10, and 11 directly. If you count "The Five Doctors" then she also worked with 1, 2, and 5. That leaves out only 6,7,8, & 9. Sarah Jane worked with 64% of all known Doctors. Any companions beat that?

Tegan kind of comes a bit close. She worked closely with 1, met 2 and 3, met 4 shortly before his regeneration, was a major companion of 5, and 'sort of' met 6 in that Sontarans thing (Plus she did a lot of publicity stuff with Colin Baker, the Bessie car and Nicola Bryant, and I think.

The Brigadier of course met 1 very briefly (Nicholas Courtney also played the Bret Vyon character in a Hartnell serial, if you count that at all), worked with 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7. If you count the novels, comics and audios he also has adventures with 6, 8, and 10.


If you count the books, Sarah Jane meets the Seventh Doctor in Bullet Time and also some of the comic strips.

The comic strip is Train Flight. She may meet the (amnesiac) 8th Doctor without realising it in the book Wolfsbane, but I'd have to check (Harry definitely meets McGann, not sure about Sarah).
