Battlestar to get a more colorful upbeat reboot?

And no Starbuck didn't knockup an angel.

In "The Return of Starbuck" it's ambiguous as to who Angela is, but the unproduced sequel ("The Wheel of Fire") specifically says she is one of the 'crew' of the Ship of Lights. But you are right, Starbuck didn't knock her up. She was already pregnant when he found her.

As for this new version, I'm all for it. You all know of my distaste for nuBSG. It was too depressing and grim for me. I want a BSG more like the original, which isn't afraid to simply be a rousing space adventure. Not everything has to be so damn serious.
Of course there should be shows (and films) that cover a broad range of themes.

But for each, they should (read must) take their premise seriously.

BSG absolutely didn't. Hell we on earth don't even have anything serious enough to compare it to. They witnessed the destruction of their species, on a interplanetary scale.

To have just a space adventure show is ludicrous. Now you might not like Moore's remake (and there are certain elements that I didn't care for), it at least held true to its premise (well technically it should have been even darker, but still).

Take Star Trek Voyager, one of the reasons that show failed (by many trek fans) is that it didn't respect its premise. The writers weren't allowed (and yes they did pitch the ideas as both part of the writers staff and as the head writer and executive producer) to take the situation that they were in in a serious manner.

Now that doesn't mean that they can't have a big action film, but it should absolutely be dark, serious and exceptionally moody.

But an adventure film, sorry that will not work with its premise, period.

I think the old BSG largely stayed true to its premise. Even with the oft-maligned casino planet bit. That set up a debate about whether they should stay or go, and the casino planet was a welcome respite, a chance for the beleaguered humans to escape from the horrors they had just endured. The Cylons were constantly pressing down on them, but they had to find ways to keep going, to have a facsimile of normality through the tough times.

I don't think staying true to the premise means any BSG has to be relentlessly grim and dark all the time. Sure you need to explore that, but there are a range of human emotions and actions/reactions that should be explored just as well.

I would rather this movie not come so soon after nuBSG just ended, however, I've always been curious about a continuation of the old show and I would like to see how it will turn out.

I don't think this new movie will be too much like Moore's BSG. I think it'll look more like Abram's Trek. In other words, a big colorful summer blockbuster-type film. Not necessarily light and fun, but not dark either.

Meh, I don't really care one way or another, but the timing seems odd. Hey, let's go remake an old series that is still in the process of being remade by a different group!!

^ It happens with songs (sometimes the cover version comes out at the same time as the original!!!). With remake-happy Hollywood, how soon before a studio produces two versions of the same movie in the same year (not counting the Exorcist/Dominion debacle)?

My comment, though, was that from a fan perspective, even one who didn't like how Moore's BSG ended up, it feels too soon. Perhaps "questionable" wasn't the best word to use ... I'd still go see a Singer interpretation of BSG. But this does feel a bit like the Trek overload from a few years back ... which makes me "question" the decision.

Well said. It's overkill right now and even if the most recent BSG did draw huge ratings, people are going to associate BSG with that show more than this film.

I try not to say never but I have no plans to see this film. To me, Ron Moore's BSG is the best the concept is going to get and it's a great one, flaws and all. I don't think this movie has to be relentlessly grim but it has to be honest to its premise. The last survivors of humanity desperately trying to stay alive while being chased by a relentless enemy.

One can hope that the new flick will find the happy medium between oldBSG and nuBSG. Whereas the original was overly campy, the remake was overly melodramatic. It is possible to treat the premise seriously and still have people looking to find as much joy and happiness in the little things of their lives -- through humor, adventure, camaraderie, collaboration, etc. If the film finds that balance (admittedly easier said than done), it should do well. Otherwise, it'll simply be a retread.

I'm just glad this is getting made because it's likely to punch some steam out of RDM's ego. Hopefully the existence of this movie will override some of BSG's undeserved popularity.

Oh I wouldn't be surprised, but it if it features the destruction of its colonies then it dramatically fails.

While it is true (based off of are own dark days) that humans do manage to fine threads and moments to celibrate and enjoy their miserable existence. But on the classic show (and do some extent nuBSG), they barely did lip service to it. Now I do understand that the medium at the time wouldn't have accepted a realistic portrayal of how the near destruction of the species, would truly effect both the masse and individuals ability to function let function on a day to day basis.

Even today, I don't think the medium could realistically portray characters in a true manner.

Dear god.. my head hurts just thinking about what acronyms people are going to come up with

oBSG, nuBSG, BSGTNGWHTS.. *head explodes*
I hearby decree that the new move shall be known as BSGWTFBBQ. ;)
After we have Bryan Singer's Battlestar Galactica, we can get...
Kevin Smith's Battlestar Galactica?
Somebody get Will Smith on the phone!
Yes!
Starbuck should be a puppy in this new version.
A robot puppy. I think Will Smith could pull it off.
I hope they bring back the robot dogs if its supposed to be a remake of the original series then. That pretty much sets the tone for the series.
"While fleeing from the Cylon tyranny, we feed our daggits Alpo!"
And for gods sake spend some money on props and costumes. I LIKED how the original worked ancient Egyptian and Roman styles into the costume designs.
I want the Pharoah helmets back. That could definitely work in the Kevin Smith version, as Starbuck and Apollo find themselves forced to build pyramids due to Starbuck having the high score at some video game. And of course, Athena and Cassiopeia would go lesbian. :bolian:
Forget the robotic Cylons go back to the original idea of the Cylons being aliens and not robots.
Actually, they were cyborgs. The original Cylons were some manner of humanoid reptiles, but they started upgrading themselves, and eventually, there were either none or very few of the originals left. The silver Cylons had one brain, gold Cylon commanders had two, ship commanders like Lucifer had three, and the Imperious Leader had four.

Which reminds me - the new movie had better have Lucifer!

No Cylon had four brains only the Imperious Leader had three.

In the Berkley novelizations for the Original Series, which Battlestar Wiki treats as non-canonical separate continuity sources, the Cylons' status in the Cylon Empire is determined by the number of brains they possess.
Centurions start off with one brain, but can achieve a "second brain" status. The Imperious Leader itself achieves a third brain status.
Achieving a second or third brain status resorts in the Cylon becoming a "reptilian sort of beast" mentally.

Alright. It's been a long time since I read any of those novels. So silvers had one, golds had two, and the Imperious Leader had three. Any clue what the deal was with Lucifer, then? Was he just a robot?

Edit: Okay, yep. Robot.

nuBSG did have a tendancy to go dark strictly for the sake of going dark. And I could have done without one, two, or ten Adama breakdowns.

Lucifer was a robot as was all of the Cylons on the TV show and the Imperious Leader was supposedly original programmed by Count Ibis. After the fist two books they kind of rebooted the books to be bring them more in line with the series which is when they brought in Luficer.

Hmm, IF this new movie does materialize, it will do nothing to override RM's nuBSG since the series has already ended successfully. What it will accomplish though, is give the franchise an identity crisis with three different versions of the same premise.

There were positive moments in nuBSG,
"Hand of God", the destruction of the resurrection hub and ship as well as the rescue off New Caprica. I don't mind positive but let's be honest here...its the end of the world for the Colonials...it should be true to that, even if the optimism is there, the cheese should not be...ever.
