The preliminaries have already aired last month and it looks like the producers have removed all the "reality tv" segments and more time is devoted to the actual fight itself. The 56 participating bots have already been whittled down to 48 bots, lots of destruction as usual.

The only rule change I noticed for this year is that quadcopter and drones are allowed. I'm kinda meh about as I don't think they'll be very useful. Quads can be taken down very easily just by damaging one rotor.

I'm very excited for season two, but yeah, the drones that they showed in the special a month ago didn't really do anything. My only regret is that they moved the show from Sunday right before The Last Ship. That was a great combo!

As someone who took a class or two on robotics design while at college, that humanoid robot is cool! Impractical for BattleBots, but still cool.

The other cool bot is the one that has a movement system with zero moving parts. It purely uses electromagnetic force to push itself across the metal floor!

The number of degrees of freedom has been a traditional problem in robotics design. Their system for robotic control of humanoid limbs is cool, especially their solution for mapping shoulder-joint movement through what's essentially a lookup-table plus interpolation.
