Battle Stars, Campaign Stars

When Starfleet had to fight wars do you think their starships were awarded battle stars, something like that awarded to US ships in Workd War II, Korea, Vietnam?
Would ground units recieve campaign stars?

We know individuals could be decorated for meritorious and/or valorous service in combat. But I doubt Starfleet awarded permanent decorations to starships. Goes against the whole "Starfleet's mission has always been one of peace" ethos.

Well I included these from my old Star Trek RPG back in the 80s:

Starfleet Unit Citation - for outstanding service as a unit, additional awards add sunbursts (1 award) or clusters (5 awards).

Starfleet Combat Star - for participation in a combat action, additional awards add palms (1 award) or clusters (5 awards).

Starfleet Combat Command Star - for command in a combat action, additional awards add palms (1 award) or clusters (5 awards).

Star of Sirius - for combat action during the Earth-Romulan War, with Gold Comet for a combat command.

Blantar Award of Valor - for combat action during the Federation-Klingon War, with Silver Asteriod for a combat command.

Axanar Medal - for combat action during the Four Years War, with Nova for combat command, with Lightning Bolt for Combat Flag Officers.

They all worked with the timeline I was using at the time so they don't really fit with the Okudachron, but a thing is what it is. They could still be adapted.

BTW those are but 6 out of the 33 Commendations and Awards of Valor that I was using at the time.

I believe that "battle stars" would exist unofficially, at least during the time of the Dominion War, on certain ships, but they would be unofficial and somewhat frowned upon by many in the hierarchy. This would be something of the same response to unbearable stress that we saw in "The Siege of AR-588." Humans may have consciously "evolved" by the 24th century in an attempt to overcome some past habits. But, as is seen in all of the series and several of the movies, they still have many of the same tendencies lying dormant until triggered by some stressful event. The crews of some ships, might for example, have a display of symbols showing their achievements ("battle stars" or "mission symbols"). At least one relatively well known ship had a collection of spent power cells from its phaser arrays on display.

I don't see why not... Just because you preach a "mantra of peace" doesn't mean you can't have teeth to reinforce the mantra.

Of course, the decoration of the same is probably mounted on the interior of the ship, so people can see them. ;)

Cheers,
