Baton Rouge - Mycelial Drive Prototype

So... This ship came about when I, some way or another, mixed up the stories and images of the Baton Rouge and the Bonaventure. The first one is, for most people, mainly just a ship. That second one is the ship the Enterprise encountered in the pocket dimension in The Animated Series. The idea I had (before realizing we're talking about two ships here) was that during illegal test runs of the Mycelial Drive, the Baton Rouge messed up and became trapped in the pocket dimension. Something something Section 31 not appreciating the finer details of Stamets' plan something.

So, does this fit canon? Nope. Does that stop me? Nope...





I managed to incorporate the tri-bussard from DSC, which actually looks good like this. Being an older ship, I'm going to let the shuttlebay door just... fold down. No complicated clamshell doors, just a plate that opens to enable access to the shuttlebay. And those impulse engines are monstrously big yes :nyah:
 
Love the concept and most of the pieces! Except the neck. I'd probably have it more TOS style (thinner, angled) or more DSC style (thicker, smooth curve from top of saucer down to back of engineering hull), as it stands it's just kind of chunky. But that's way more words about the single negative among so many positives! I want to see those nacelles fronts in more light! Love love love the huge impulse deck, not usually a big impulse deck fan, but it looks great here!
 
Yeah, the neck is a thing. It mainly came about because it "felt" better, because of perceived weight; the impulse deck being as large as it is, a thin neck would give the feeling it'd just snap off. And yes, next test will showcase the nacelles way better!

I mean, hell, you can apparently just leave it completely open for most of a season if you want to. :whistle:;)

Nice ship. :techman: Not sure what's up with you kids and your obsession with putting unnecessary holes in perfectly nice saucers - but this one is lovely anyway.
 
I've done some work on main engineering, sketching out a layout I'm happy with. When I've translated it all to 3D I can have a better grasp if the suggested scale works or not. I could also use some pointers on how to modernize that centre console (with the half-globes on it) which now also houses a mycelial cannister port, and how to properly make a nice TOS warp core. Because that core seriously eludes me how it is even supposed to work...

 
I like it. I think a ship like this should be tight. She's not too big overall, so I believe it works nicely.

The cathedral is shaping up quite nicely, though I need to find a way to let the actual cores light up better. I might insert some "plasma" effect inside of the tubes, which are now lighted by using a spotlight on each end. If I add a physical plasma thingy, the light might bounce off of it better and give use a nice lightshow. Also: the base of the cores is now almost the same color as the cores themselves, lowering contrast. The diagonal cores were originally blue, but that gave off too much of a TNG vibe, but that results in a less interesting image. So either the bases change, or the cores.

I'm also dubbing about adding some more armatures on the bulkheads to improve lighting conditions. It's weird: I added more lights on the sides, but I think the brushed aluminum I'm using for the floor now makes it all look a bit more clinical than the original render. Might have to play around with that as well...
 
Well depending on which theory you're reading, the center console with the domes is the top part of the M/AM reactor (warp core) and the dilithium is in there regulating it while the rest of it resides under the floor and ties into the cathedral.

*shrugs*

I have to say that is a fantastic take on Engineering. It feels like the Engine Room on a TOS ship.

Thanks! Yeah, I saw something sliding up in TAS, but it's all a bit murky as to what goes where.

On a side note: have you ever seen someone make a TOS-era engineering that isn't a 1 on 1 copy of a Constitution's set? I've tried to find them to have a better grasp what to do with it, but it would appear there are none...

I've only ever seen someone's take on it for a 3D version of the Animated Series that expanded the TOS Engineering a bit with catwalks and a few other things. Almost anyone doing TOS tends to base Engineering off the Connie. I muddled around with doing a Phase II/TOS crossbreed for a Destroyer/Scout a while back. It's bigger than the Connie set, but it's also 2 decks in the saucer where it has to cram the impulse and warp drive all in one go.

Again though, very much a TOS/Phase II crossbreed going on there and definitely off what you're going with here.

I think you have a really great vibe going on with it though. It FEELS right like it belongs in that era. Very cool.
 
I've seen that model, yeah. But as you said, that was an extension of the main Constitution set, and even then that was already seen on TV.

I do like your TMP set though. Something about it being very retro. I dig it!
 
Testing the bridge lighting. You win some...

Lighting conditions during red alert need to be improved way, way more. I'll probable be ditching the purple inside the bulkheads and replace them with lights behind glass, just like the overhead light. The lights that are recessed in the floor don't show up as well either, but that's an error I made with what lighted up and what didn't. Also: for some reason or another, the lights in the overhead tubes don't show up either. Might have to replace them with spots, though that might be a bit too much.
 
Did some work on... well, everything. Except for the bridge and engineering. Those'll have to wait...



The paneling is coming along quite nicely. I'm in doubt if I want to have windows on the outer ring. Perhaps a few, but I want to paint a very clear picture that the outer ring isn't meant for habitation.



The secondary hull does have windows! Also very clear: the new warp coil covers! The nacelles still need intercoolers at the aft though...



Peek into the shuttlebay! It's coming along quite fine...
