Last week we discussed the possibility of Superman moving to Marvel.

Batman isn't moving to Marvel anytime soon. But I have often wondered; would Batman be better off in the Marvel universe, or a darker universe, where he could be more 'on the edge' than he is at DC.

Or not even Marvel, what about Dark Horse or the others?

Then, again, is Batman's constant battle between crossing over that 'line', or not, what makes him better in a DC Universe, the causing the writers to share that same battle with him?

I'm not sure there is a difference between Marvel and DC these days. I see no distinct advantage to a move to Marvel. With the possible exception being that he would be a member of every team like Wolverine.

I think Marvel characters, at least in the past, were darker in tone. But if not Marvel, what about another company with no ties to DC so that Batman could be 'unleashed'? Or, is it best he stay tied to some sort of 'regulator', the regulator being DC's universe.

I'd need to know how Batman is being held back. From what I can tell he's DC top character and his adventures are not all "sweetness and light". His characterization is "Psycho-Ninja" and his villians are mostly more twisted and insane than he is. They've also killed and crippled his partners and sidekicks in horrible manners, so I'm not sure how much darker he can get. If anything they might need to lighten him up.

Batman definitely belongs at DC. He's the most popular character by far, and pretty much the face of the company at this point (anecdotal, but Batman stands in the front of the DC trinity on the cover of Jim Lee's new skecthbook). He'd always be overshadowed by Spider-Man and Wolverine at Marvel.

I will go so far as to say that the entire cast of MARVEL would be better off at DC than any DC would be at Marvel, given the current editorial regime...

Yeah, I'm afraid I'm just not clear on what Marvel could do to make Batman darker short of, like, making him a sex-offender or something like that?

But all that happened more recently..Marvel's characters far more darker than DC in the 70s and 80s. In fact, I remember my Marvel fans of that time picking on "DC" for their 'goody two shoe' heroes all those years..

Certainly the newer Batman, all the Frank Miller stuff, would not have been allowed to be done back in the 60s and 70s when Marvel was doing some of their 'character driven' stuff.

Now, trust me, I am not saying I want him at marvel. I have always said that the limits DC put on their writers (by the way, I met Steve Englehart years ago and he lamented about the editorial staff keeping an eye on what they did) were 'good' for the heroes, if not good for the hip factor.

Spider-Man and Iron Man are examples number one and two of what happens when editors go crazy with power. Spider-Man gets his marriage wiped from existence (Brand New Day), and Iron Man turns into a tyrannical @#%QW!@ (Civil War).

Honestly, I don't think any of the marvel characters benefit for the "Marvel universe." There are a lot of great Marvel characters, but they keep getting over-whelmed by the NEXT BIG MARVEL EVENT (aka whatever is on the editorial dartboard).

Miller's seminal work on Batman happened 20 years ago and Englehart's was 30 years ago. Batman has been getting darker and darker for all of those 20 years. As for DC, have you seen the killing spree over there? With SuperboyPrime decapitating, evicerating and dismembering heroes left and right Wonder Woman snapping Max Lord's neck. Sue Dinby raped by Dr Light. later she is killed and her body burned by Jean Loring. Going back 20 years you have Robin getting beat to death by the Joker and Batgirl getting shot through the stomach and spine. Hal Jordan killing off most of the GL Corps. All "on camera". How much darker does DC have to get? Hell even in the 70s you had the Spectre turing guys into wood and running them through a buzz saw.

I was reading a lot of DC and Marvel books in the 70s and 80s and I can't say Marvel was all that much darker. Though I don't recall Marvel having one of their adult villains sleep with an underage teen hero who betrays their team to him.

And now they have zombies...I think the spill over of horror into comics has been terrible. I thought DC was coming back, with the excellent work Geoff Johns did with JSA...but when I went to the comic book store with my son and saw all the zombie shit i was really let down..

Greg Cox, if you stroll through this thread, what is your take on the current fixation with horror and comic books..

By the way..my son and i went to this dude's garage sell and got a bunch of used comic books for 25 bucks...old 70s BRAVE AND THE BOLD and JLA as well as DC SUPERTEAM and FIVE STAR SPECTACULARS...and best of all?? NO MARVEL!!

If he was at Marvel, he would have been bitten by a radioactive bat as his origin. He would have been part Spiderman, part Daredevil.
