Batman: Arkham Asylum IS AWESOME, buy it now

Man I feel so out of touch with the gaming world. All the reviews I'm seeing are absolutely glowing about this game, the buzz here in this thread is extremely favorable, and yet I played the demo and was just kind "meh" about the whole experience.

I guess I've played so many damned shooters that I've just ruined myself for all other game types.

Eh, it's alright. The demo was pretty damn short, and they teased us with unreachable areas via missing tools.

Well I think it has a lot to do with me not being too thrilled about hand-to-hand combat style games. It seems like that usually relies on the ability to push a series of buttons in rapid succession and I, well I just suck at that. Consquesently I don't really care for combat style play. Maybe if I would have gotten to play with the "toys" a little more I would have liked it more.

Of course all demos to a point suck because I'm always so lost as to what I should be doing.

Finished my first playthrough on Normal mode yesterday with 81% of the game completed. Am just freeplaying at the moment to mop up the remaining Riddler challenges. Then I'm gonna jump into the challenge maps before going for a second playthrough on Hard.

God I love this game.

I think after I finish playing through this and get all the achievements, I'm going to trade it in and get the PS3 version and do it all over again (plus the Joker challenges).

Well despite my previous comments about the combat and being "meh" about the demo, I'm still considering this game. I don't know if it's because I want to be want of the "in" crowd, ( )or if it's because I feel like because of all the great reviews that I didn't give it a fair shake. I went into the demo predisposed to not liking it, and I think that may have colored my judgement a lot.

When a game gets THIS much praise, usually I do end up liking the game.

I think it'd be a good idea to pick this up. Normally when I buy a game, I've followed it throughout most of its development and I know everything I can about it and I know I'm going to like it. I don't have money to burn, you see.

I'm not a big Batman fan nor has any Batman game ever got me excited, so I passed on this one. Then I was informed how it was written by Paul Dini and that it was supposedly going to be a fantastic game. I tried the demo, but I was still unsure. I risked the day one purchase and have been nothing but pleased with myself.

Also, I wanted to correct one of my posts from earlier. Someone asked about the batclaw during combat and I answered, but my answer was only half-correct. You have to double tap the left trigger, not tap it. I realize I'm like, two pages late with that...

Now back to the challenges, I finally completed all the Riddler stuff earlier today. :)

I don't know if you're talking bout PS3 or 360, but for 360 double tap left trigger is batarang, double tap right trigger is grapple.

Yeah I hear you on the "money to burn" thing. That's why I'm a little gun shy to spend $60 when I know I have reservations going in. Still EVERYBODY who has it, has highly recommended it and I figure where there's smoke, there's fire.

Supposedly next week Best Buy is going to run a "Buy one, get one 1/2 off" sale on PS3 titles. Might use this as my opportunity to pick this up and some other title like Little Big Planet.

Yeah, it's the right trigger. I ended up reading the manual. :p

Yeah, RTFM n00b! ;)
Wow, I botched my own correction. Total fail on my part. :sigh:

So does anyone who has the PC version have any recommendations about the controls? As I've said upthread I'm not sure about being able to play with mouse and keyboard and adding a controller as well would be an added expense. I do BADLY want the game though...

PC version isn't out yet, but the demo is up for download.

The only issue that I had with the controls was that the "aim batarang" button is the same as the "counterattack" button, So when doing the demo, I'd forever being yanking out the batarang when trying to counterattack, and getting pummeled for my pains. Or to get my pains... :wtf: ...whatever. And with no way that I could see to change it, it was frustrating to say the least.

Hopefully the full version will have ways to change the keybindings.

Personally I already own a Windows Xbox360 controller, so no trouble there. I'd highly recommend getting one, I originally only bought it because I have a lot of old console emulators and it seamed to do the job plus it turned out to be a surprisingly good joystick substitute for some of my old flight simulator type games (X-Wing, Crimson Skies, etc) and then I went and got two of the newer Tomb Raider games, which suited it perfectly.
Still can't get the hang of FPSs with the pad though, I'm sticking to the old mouse & keyboard for that. ;)

Yeah I feel like a bit of a fool - I hadn't realised that the PC version was coming out SO much later. I'm definitely tempted by the 360 controller, although playing FPSs on it is NEVER going to be a good idea. My problem had stemmed from the fact that the demo doesn't let you rebind the keys.

It's a wonder to me how FPSs have become so popular on the consoles. Three times I've had a go at various FPSs on the pad and I just can't deal with how clumsy and inaccurate it feels. I can see why they don't let PC users go up against Console users in online multiplayer games like L4D & TF2. The PC players would run rings around them. ;)

It is kind of odd. I'm a lot better at FPS games on consoles than I am on PCs. And I just find pulling an actual trigger more comfortable than clicking a mouse.

Actually played the demo conclusion tonight, and I had in fact had not given it a fair shake previously. I can tell it could be a pretty solid game. I still probably won't be a big fan of the hand to hand combat, but overall I see why everybody is getting at.

And as a bonus, a friend is going to loan me his copy. Score!

I have a question - Are there a bunch of controls you have to learn for this game? I liked Prototype, but you had to know all kinds of things in order to be successful in this game. I like games that have easy controls, not ones that you have to click on numerous buttons/triggers to pull that menu to do this or that.

It uses all 9 positions on the D-pad to use Batman's different gadgets.
