Bathroom Breaks

I sure hope we don't see one. Just like I don't feel the need in any other film to see people in the bathroom... unless (like in RoboCop) there's some larger plot point to be made.

The propensity of nuBSG to show bathroom scenes is... disturbing. We all know that they do it... is it REALLY necessary to SHOW THE SPECIFICS of it?

"Captain can I ask you to stop calling me number one?"
"Whys that?"
"I over heard an ensign saying he was going to the bathroom to do a Riker"

(slightly edited for non Sev fans)

I'm also amazed that every interesting event occurs while the main bridge crew (the one we know and love) is at their stations. I have to assume there are one or two other bridge crews that each take 8 or 10 hour shifts. I don't think our heroes spend 24 hours a day on the bridge.

Especially in Nemesis when Picard says they have been waiting hours and hours for Shinzon to show up...

I'd be happy just to see someone walk into a door named "Bathroom" even if we dont see inside, just so I know for a fact the Enterprise has them.

What makes you think you're not just missing 80% of the action that happens on your favorite starship?

Voyager dealt with this a little bit with Harry Kim running the nightshift. Think the rest of the Trek saga hasnt really touched on it tho.

Maybe the captain could be in the bathroom when someone attacks the ship :))

I knew someone would ask me that...I don't want to think that way, because that means that Roddenberry, Gene Coon, and Berman cheated me out of good stories, and I would be pissed .

...then again, maybe that's what happened on ENT: all the interesting stories occurred when the nightshift was on, thus we never saw them. That would explain things. ;)

Back on topic: I remember seeing a bridge plan -- non canonical source, of course -- that included a head (bathroom) behind the main view screen.

Well, you know, there WAS a bathroom on the TNG bridge. The door opposite the one that led to the conference lounge. We saw someone walk out of it once... and I remember that was the first time it had been "seen" and everyone made a big deal of it! ;)

Just as a side note, I thought about this when I did my "big ship design" and I created a bridge that was sort of an expansion of the TOS bridge concept but with some of the TNG-era "extras" too. I put the Command Briefing Room(not "conference lounge") forward of the main viewer. I put an airlock at the aft (since, like the TMP-era bridge, this is detachable and can be a last-ditch lifeboat), the Captain's Office to the port, and the Bridge Crew Ready Room to the starboard.

The Command Crew Ready Room was my idea for how to deal with the realities of what you're discussing. Every so often, a junior officer would be given an extra duty (outside of his normal shift hours) to spend a shift in there. This would be a rotating "extra duty" so you'd always have SOMEONE in there but any particular guy would only get the duty once a week or once every two weeks or whatever. He would be the guy who'd cover for any of the on-duty bridge crew when they'd go in there to take bathroom or meal breaks. This would provide "on the job training" for the junior officer, too.

During alert states, you'd have more than one guy in there, so that they could fill in for anyone who had to leave their post immediately.

We saw "replacement crewmen" walk in from off-camera each time that the main crew all got together and left the bridge. This was my idea of WHERE they'd be coming from.

Here are several views of my bridge concept. Click the thumbnails to see in higher-resolution images.

I've always felt that the level below the bridge possibly contained bridge crew toilets and the captain's ready room, among other functions. We never saw this level and don't really know what is contained there (although that could be where the phaser control room is that we saw on episodes such as Balance of Terror)

Never knew a storyline that needed a bodily function to move the plot forward.

Knew a couple of storylines that were bodily functions, however...

I honestly don't know why this question even pops up from time to time. Who wants to watch our heroes taking bathroom breaks?

---------------

Almost every Stanley Kubrick film had a bathroom scene. Maybe Kubrick was on to something.

Cary L. Brown, I like that ship design of yours. You ought to consider putting up a web site to describe the ship's design, how it evolved, your thoughts behind it, etc.

The film should have an extended bathroom break that also serves as an intermission. ;)
