Barry Sonnenfeld attached to direct DC's Metal Men

Do these robots invented by the brilliant scientist fight crime? I think that might be a deal breaker if this becomes a superhero movie or not.

Anyway Iron Man 3 and Avengers 2 will be done before this. I guess it won't matter by the time this movie comes out.

Of course they'll fight crime, but that won't make a Metal Men movie play like an Iron Man rip-off. There are too many differences between the concepts for that to be the case. Frankly they're so different that it hadn't occurred to me that anyone would even bring them up together before this thread.

I just worry if this is made into another terrible DC movie like Green Lantern that it will somehow harm the Iron Man brand. I guess it is pointless to argue about this until this thing is greenlit.

Uhh, yes, that's what superheroes do. By that definition, Iron Man itself would be a "ripoff" of Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, the X-Men, etc. And particularly Steel, which is also about a genius weapons designer who finds his weapons are being misused and atones by becoming an armored superhero. Of course, in the comics, Steel was created decades after Iron Man, but the kind of idiots who scream "ripoff" every time they see a passing similarity between movies or shows would probably be unaware that the movies were based on comic books in the first place.

If anything, Metal Men is more likely to be compared to the X-Men, since it's about a team of superpowered misfits led by a brilliant scientist. (Although DC's Doom Patrol is even closer to the X-Men, right down to having a mentor in a wheelchair.)

You are reading far, far, far too much into the titles.

That's one of the most bizarre comments I've ever read. Why would a B or C list characters like the Metal Men (no offense to their fans but they aren't A list) even remotely harm "Iron Man"? Even with similar names?

Some moviegoers might look at a Metal Men trailer and say, "So, it's kinda like a comedy version of Transformers," even though the way the Metal Men shape-shift is very different to that of the Transformers, but I can't see moviegoers thinking it brings Iron Man to mind.

Here's a clip of the Metal Men in action in Batman: The Brave and the Bold:

That's the exact reason why I think this will confuse the general audience. Both have similar titles and robot looking things in the possible trailers fighting crime. It feels a little like Warners trying to cash in on the Iron Man craze. Maybe they should wait a few more years before doing this?

This would be like Warners greenlighting a Stargirl and S.T.R.I.P.E. movie immediately after the first Iron Man was release. Another superhero in armor fighting crime.

I'm one of those people that think the only reason that a Justice League movie might really happen now is because Warners saw how successful Avengers has been.

Feels to me more like DC Ent is once again trying to promote and develop their B and C characters. I very much doubt it has anything to do with cashing in on the "Iron Man" craze just because they share similar names.

Like I said, you're reading bizarrely too much into a vague similarity of titles. Anyone seeing five seconds of Metal Men is going to know it's nothing like Iron Man. Especially given that it's from Barry Sonnenfeld, the director behind the Men in Black and Addams Family movies, and is likely to be quirky and offbeat.

No, it's not really like that at all, because for the eleventieth time, the Metal Men are nothing like that. They aren't people in armor. They aren't just one hero or one hero with a sidekick. They aren't anything like a conventional superhero tale. They're one of the weirdest, most offbeat superhero concepts out there, and they're in the hands of one of the weirdest, most offbeat directors out there.

Then I'm surprised you aren't comparing Metal Men to The Avengers instead, because at least those are both team concepts.

Because it was the idea of a Superhero in armor that made Iron Man a success.

No.

Even if that weren't total nonsense I wouldn't give a fuck; I'd rather see three "terrible" movies like GL than another Iron Man 2.

Uhh, no, because then the 1997 Steel movie with Shaquille O'Neal would've been a success, rather than a disastrous failure that cost $16 million to make and only earned $1.7 million in domestic box office. As I said above, Steel and Iron Man are basically the same story in broad strokes: genius inventor becomes armored hero to get weapons he invented out of the wrong hands. But the former was a huge flop and the latter was a huge hit. Which had a lot to do with the fact that Robert Downey, Jr. is a much better actor than Shaq, and the fact that his movie had a better script and nearly nine times the budget. What made Iron Man a success wasn't its subject matter, it was the talent and skill of the people who made it.

Rats, I knew I should have included the  smiley.

Hopefully Mercury will remind everyone at least 5 times that he is the only metal that is liquid at room temperature.

And Tin must save the day.

Oh, what's the point?

Iron Man was only a success because the confusing name led people to think it was a sequel to Steel.

Of course. ;)

That's a closer comparison but still silly considering the vastly different characters and origin story.

Anyway, I'm not really familiar with the Metal Men, but this sounds like fun for sure.
