Barry Sonnenfeld attached to direct DC's Metal Men

[Out Of My Vulcan Mind]

While promoting Men in Black 3, Barry Sonnenfeld mentioned that he was talking to Warner Bros about directing a comic book movie for them. Vulture has now discovered that he's attached to direct Metal Men. Producer Lauren Shuler Donner (who produced Constantine for Warners and the X-Men films for Fox) has been developing the property for some five years now.

Sonnenfeld is attached to direct a number of other projects, too, so it's not a done deal that Metal Men will come together as his next film.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold gives them a great introduction in "The Clash of the Metal Men," and Magnus and co. return just often enough through the rest of Season 2, especially during the Starro Invasion.

I hope they can give us something new besides version 2.0 of the T2 effect. From the point of view of what's been done before, there shouldn't be anything fundamentally challenging here for the CGI. I see the challenge as being to deliver something that has never been seen before.

The way they can combine together to form different things has the potential to play that role.

What's more important to me is whether it's a good story with good characters. It's kind of an odd concept for the mainstream audience, and it might be tricky to make shapeshifting robots named after metals into sympathetic, identifiable characters that a non-comics audience can take seriously and care about. If they don't pull that off, then what the special effects look like is irrelevant.

This is interesting, since he's also attached and has mentioned during "Men in Black 3" press junkets that he's gonna direct his and Grant Morrison's "Dinosaurs Vs Aliens". I wonder which one he'll actually end up doing.

The concept and likely tone of a Metal Men movie are different enough to Iron Man that it won't be a problem.

The fact that it's Metal Men, plural, and is about a team of shapechanging robots rather than a single guy in an armor suit makes it unlikely that any "ripoff" accusations could hold water.

Oh, and there's also the fact that the Metal Men were created a whole year before Iron Man.
