Barack Obama Wins The Nobel Peace Prize

I have nothing against Obama being nominated so soon after taking office, fter all it was possible as the President of the world's only superpower that he might have done something outstanding for world peace between nomination and a final decision being made.

However I do not think he has done enough to warrant him getting the Nobel Prize though I have hopes he will in the future.

I don't see anything wrong with Arafat being awarded it. At the time he was awarded it he did deserve it - it is a committee that the Committee cannot strip people of Nobel Peace Prize if their actions later are against peace.

I don't think Al Gore should have gotten it. He doesn't practice what he preaches. In his house more than 20 times the amount of power is used than in mine and I concede that I could cut further back (especially if I had money to install solar power). I think there are people who are trying to get the Climate Change message across who are far more worthy of the award than Al Gore is.

They gave it to him for what he hopefully will do.

I hope I win the lottery, doesn't mean I will, but fuck it give me the money now anyways!

That's what this is. Does anyone have a list of the others that could have won it? I'd like to see who Obama beat.

As far as I know the Nobel Foundation does not release the names of the nominees for 50 years. Only members of the Foundation are allowed to make nominations.

I read (methinks on the BBC website) that the Norweigan Parliment appoints the members, and most of them are from academic backgrounds.

You seem to be correct. It looks like the Peace Prize is handed a bit differently that the other Prizes because it is handled in Norway not Sweden.

The people who can make nominations are -

*Members of national assemblies and governments and members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union,
*Members of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and the *International Court of Justice at the Hague,
*Members of Institut de Droit International,
*University professors of history, political science, philosophy, law and theology, university presidents and directors of peace research international affairs institutes,
*Former recipients, including board members of organisations that have previously won the prize,
*Present and past members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, and
*Former permanent advisers to the Norwegian Nobel Institute.

also unlike the other Nobel Prizes, which only recognizse completed accomplishment, the Nobel Peace Prize may be awarded to persons or organszations that are in the process of resolving a conflict or creating peace.

So this means Obama could be considered worthy of it.

I like what some old CBS guy said "This has almost nothing to do with the current administration and everythnig to do former one. Obama won it because he isn't George Bush".

Congrats, Mr President:bolian:
I know many ppl will start now bashing him and the award..but In my opinion he deserves this award.
The political climate has become much more positive during his presidency and he has worked hard in the field of diplomacy, thoug I do admit theres much work to be done.
I hope President Obama uses this oportunity to speed up and revamp the Middle-east peace process:cool:...

I agree. I've heard complaints about him winning the prize because he hasn't even been president for long, but really it shouldn't have much of anything to do with the office he occupies and should have more to do with his effect on the world through his words and actions, towards the goal of obtaining peace. People seem to be forgetting (or ignoring) the ideas he has espoused since long before he took office, and the fact that he seems to actually be attempting to deliver on much of the progress he promised in the campaign instead of just leaving it empty rhetoric. It is a deserved award, in my opinion.

I thought I saw a list of nominees but they must have been likely/suspected nominees and there were a number of people on that list that I thought would be more deserving at this point in time of the award. However, I guess the committee weighed the options and thought differently...or also likely that the list I saw was erroneous.

Talk about a Vote of Confidence. :rommie:

Unfortunately, the Peace Prize became politicized a while ago. This does mean a lot, but not what it should.

Officially, the names of the other nominees won't be released for fifty years.

I'm no Obama basher. But this is a total joke. It really is getting creepy how so many people seem to almost worship this guy.

I think it is kind of scary and disturbing when people pin their hopes and dreams on a freakin' politician whether they are on the left or right.

So far his presidency as been mediocre at best. He hasn't even kept any of his promises from the election.

Obama definitely isn't the monster that the right makes him out to be. But he isn't anything special either. Just another phony politician who will say anything to get elected. That is my two cents.

He doesn't deserve this. Give the guy a term or two (??) in office and then take a look at whether he deserves it. But the NP has been a total joke for a long time now anyway so why not?

I think he deserves the prize just on restraining himself from bombing FOX NEWS.

Now that you bring it up.....he is a radical muslim.

A sickening choice.

I wonder if he'll disappoint his drones when he sends reinforcements to Afghanistan. Or will he cut and run and lose a war that he now owns?

Gotta laugh my ass off at this, what with the aggressive US policy towards Iran which presents no more threat than an ant waving a tiny stick. Despite a change in rhethoric and presentation the medecine (poison) is still the same as that administed under the Bush admin.

Absolutely. When things turn bad the mob turn to the ideological strong man who will fix all their problems with his grasp of history and world affairs. It happened with Hitler, the Obama situation is different, the adulation isn't as frenzied but the patern is similar. Was thinking that 1984 isn't a prophetic book at all, its a perfect metaphor for how the majority of people have always behaved in society.

I have nothing particular against Obama, I just think it's stupid to give any award - let alone the Nobel Peace Prize - for something that a person MIGHT do. Awards should only ever be given for accomplishments that have already been made.

I mean, what if Obama turns out to be a crappy president from this moment onward? The prize then means nothing, because then he won't have done what he was awarded it for.

Can you back that up? Or are you just posting in order to coax someone into responding angrily?

Sure. He was raised as a muslim which is not in dispute. His views are obviously radical. Here's just a sample of his own words to illustrate the point. If you'd like more let me know.

From Audacity of Hope: "I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

I notice you didn't express any view on the bombing of FOX news however.....

^ Obama is not a Muslim.

As for the second link: You misquoted him. He does not mention Muslims specifically. Read this:
In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.
