Band of Brothers inspiration dies at age 92

PKerr

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
"Maj. Richard "Dick" Winters, the man whose quiet leadership was chronicled in the World War II book and television miniseries "Band of Brothers," has died in central Pennsylvania.

Winters died Jan. 2, a family friend confirmed Monday. Winters was 92. He lived in Hershey but died in Palmyra, Pa.

In September 1944, Winters led 20 men in a successful attack on 200 German soldiers. He and his men later helped hold the Bastogne (bas-TOHN') area of Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge.

The exploits of Winters and the other members of Easy Company were chronicled in the Stephen Ambrose book "Band of Brothers" and later the HBO miniseries of the same name. Winters also published a memoir in 2006 entitled "Beyond Band of Brothers."

Winters was buried in a private funeral. Arrangements for a public memorial service are pending."

Thank you for your service, Rest In Peace sir.

One of my favorite quotes

"Were you a hero grandpa?" "No, but I served in a company of heroes."

Dick Winters was a hero-any man that can inspire and protect those in his command under such trying combat situations is. While WWII was filled with many such heroes, Winter's story got to me when I learned it. He was an ordinary man asked to do extraordinary things and he rose to the occasion.
RIP sir.

Not many people can truly say that they made the world a better place, but you sure can.

Rest in Peace, Major Winters.

"I wasn't a hero but I served in a company of heroes"

R.I.P Major Winters, a true hero.

RIP... Deeply saddened to hear this.

I loved the book and the series.. He was truely a hero among heros. I've been meaning to pick up his own book that came out after B of B...

Rest in Peace, Major. A whole new generation has been touched by the sacrifices you and your men made over half a century ago. A generation that is free to thank you for them because of what you and others did then.
I hope we can do you proud.

Stands in salute - a hero. a REAL big, damned hero. Ever since I first watched Band of Brothers last year I had wanted to meet him but knew his health wouldn't permit it.

Maj Winters Sir, you made me ashamed of my inaction but proud to be American.

RIP Major Winters.

How amazing and fantastic that men who parachuted into France on D-Day and survived the Battle of the Bulge would make it another 60+ years past those events when there were multiple chances they could be killed at any moment.
