Balance Of Terror was a WW2 Sub and Destroyer film in space

DumbDumb2007

Commander
I watched Balance of Terror with the special effects redone. Watched it on TiVo. Did everyone realise it was a redoing of an old Word War 2 film called The Enemy Below ? In that film a US navy destroyer Captain has to out think a German Manvy Submarine Captain. each Captain is handicapped by the limitations of his own ship. One is a surface vessel and the other submersible. Both keep taking shots at each other and half of them miss.
They even used an old WW2 sub trick too. Debris is fired out of the Romulan Ship's Torpedo Tube to make it look as if the Bird Of Prey is Sunk/destroyed.
Anyone catch that one?

Old news. :) Been discussed many times before.

Lots of new topic posts DumbDumb, and in a familiar style. Why do I feel like paraphrasing The Conscience of the King: "His history begins almost to the day where 'Kodos' disappeared."

The scribe pretty much confessed. :) However, kudos for apparently noticing the similarity without this having been pointed out. I wouldn't have. (Maybe because I don't watch many old war movies.)

Good episode though.

But he didn't say anything about where he was when he first saw it, what time it was, who else was in the room, and what he was eating.

Things I've known for 40 years for $500, please, Alex. :)

Specifically, "Balance of Terror" is a reworking of a 1957 film, "The Enemy Below." Some additional elements may have been borrowed from the 1958 film "Run Silent, Run Deep," although this is not as widely agreed upon.

No one has ever caught that before. You win the prize.

Now let's give the newbie a chance. He has to make Star Trek his own and these kind of things are the way that happens.

We've all had our "A-ha!" moments as adults with Trek. Mine was when I realized the Jefferies tubes didn't go up the pylons. I thought for sure they did for the longest time.

He's a newbie in name only. Don't these posts look "aweful" familiar?

Re: Balance Of Terror was a WW2 Sub and Destroyer film in sp

^^Oh, I'm still sure they go uyp the pylons. Can't imagine any other good reason to have them at the same angle.

Re: Balance Of Terror was a WW2 Sub and Destroyer film in sp

At times it's almost scene-for-scene from "Enemy Below" (a film I love), complete with the cynical anti-Nazi sub captain and his long-time best buddy and the smarmy junior officer). The only thing missing in BoT is a scene of all the Romulans singing "So Leben Wir"(a drinking song to the tune of the Dessauer March).

And has anyone ever noticed the TOS episode 'The Enemy Within' was a take on the old Terrytoon 'Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Heckle'? Hmmmm....

Re: Balance Of Terror was a WW2 Sub and Destroyer film in sp

And I swear WWF is copying the Gamesters of Triskillion.

I defer to you, as I do not watch any WWF.

You win!

Anyhoo, this is one pretty good reason that I rate BoT at around the bottom for season one episodes. Of course, that would put it near the top if it were in most other seasons of anything....

Re: Balance Of Terror was a WW2 Sub and Destroyer film in sp

^^^WWE. WWF is the World Wildlife Fund.

You guys are so 20th century.

Re: Balance Of Terror was a WW2 Sub and Destroyer film in sp

Wrestling, wildlife, whatever...
