Bajoran Expatriate Community

While doing some research about Bajorans for an upcoming fanfic of mine, tentatively titled Star Trek: Voyager - Realm of Darkness, one of my responders StarryEyed brought up an interesting point.

My story is gonna feature Celes Tal as a major character, and StarryEyed brought up the following point:

Not that we know anything regarding Tal Celes' background but my impression is that she is an off-worlder. So many Bajorans we saw had a lot of pent-up hostility and bitterness - perfectly understandable for anyone who grew up under the occupation. Tal Celes didn't show a trace of that. She doesn't act at all like someone who experienced a traumatic upbringing. She acts like someone who was raised in the Federation.

I tend to agree with StarryEyed's assessment and will write it as such. I wonder how large the Bajoran expat community is in the Federation. I would gather rather large.

And in general I wonder what immigrating to Federation Worlds is like? Would it be as hard or easy as immigrating to the US? And I wonder how large of a community the Bajoran ex-pats would be? I imagine rather large.

I don't know who the character you're talking about is. But the Bajorans are interesting. Some of them seem to live in refugee camps with all the privations that brings, and others seem to be doing well in the Federation - Ro Laren, Sito Jaxa. It's an interesting question you raise. I'm quite interested in the idea of immigration into the Federation and refugees from Federation worlds. I've occassionally thought of writing a fanfic that would explore what the refugee/immigration status would be like for the Federation and how they would deal with it, following the Dominion War.

The character I refer to is Crewman Celes Tal, she was in the Good Shepherd and The Haunting of Deck 12, as well as having a brief cameo on Workforce for the series Star Trek: Voyager.
