Spoilers Bad sign for one Trek character, actor cast in new show

Either way: Discovery starts shooting in April. Even if season 2 won't take 10 months, but let's say 7 or 8 months... (which I doubt), but even so: I don't think FX will wait for Doug Jones to be finished filming Star Trek for him to join the rest of the cast of this new comedy series... You can't be a series regular in Star Trek and also have enough time to be a recurring character on another show. Not when Star Trek takes at least 8 months to film a season...

Don't know if it's a bluff or not. Saru is the most interesting character left in the show - not that this show lends itself to fan attachment to characters. However being the most interesting character in a sea of boring characters (and writing) could spell doom for Mr. Jones, so best to have multiple options.

Doug Jones is a popular suit actor, so am not surprised....I can see him doing Trek for the love of it, and for working with friends, but he is as A list as suit actors get in the West...a series commitment for more than a year always felt unlikely. Though not impossible.

The interesting aspect is Saru is the only main character who has no reason not to be on Discovery next season. In order to have him not continue on the show, they'd need to literally kill him off. Everyone else has plausible reasons for not coming back within the confines of the story.

What do you mean? Pip got her demands, and needs a packed lunch. That’s plausible, looking at the clips...

He also qualified that with "for now". We all know no one would lie or mislead people about their status on one show when they are cast in another....

Variety states it's one of four roles that are at least recurring. Acccording to Ben Fransham, Jones is playing his character in the show, who is one of the main characters in the movie.

To be fair, that character didn't exactly last the entire movie, though I would hope a TV show wouldn't waste the comedic potential of keeping around the most "far gone" of the vampires.

Meh, I think everyone is jumping the gun here. For all we know, he could have started filming awhile ago. NDA's are the name of the game nowadays

That's literally killing him off though. Everyone else has reasons to not come back:

Ash has openly said he isn't going to be allowed to serve.
Burnham believes she will be sent back to prison after the war is over.
Stamets is planning on leaving Starfleet and going back to Earth to "heal."
Tilly needs to graduate from the Academy and receive her permanent assignment.

Everyone has a plausible "out" but Saru. He can only leave the show via death.

Death and Chopsticks. The Title to the secret bonus epilogue. That or ‘Garlic Butter is for First Officers’

For all we know Saru gets served for dinner in the last episode. ;)

Seriously though - the article said he'd have a recurring role - recurring doesn't mean 'series regular'. Actors can do multiple gigs as long as the scheduling is planned out.

He could get his captain's stripe but to another ship. That would leave the option for him to come back.

He could be killed off or be given a new ship of his own, after all Starfleet have lost a lot of ships and crews in the war.

Which would then increase Burnham's chances of taking command of the Discovery.

Could be good for Tilly as well.

Having seen What we do in the shadows film the character Jones is playing literally spends most of his time in the movie asleep in his coffin, the role whilst a main character, doesn't have a lot of screen time and also doesn't make it to the end of the film. If they give the character the same treatment in the series, he may not be in every episode or even in more than one episode. Also, considering Matt Berry is involved, the seasons, may only be 6 - 8 episodes long (as are the series he has worked on) and considering they are only 30 minute episodes, filming probably wont be that arduous for Jones.

I highly recommend you see 'what we do in the shadows' by the way it is a hilarious movie.

I have a distinct feeling season 2 is going to look a lot different from season 1. Essentially, this show is centrered around Burnham. It's essentially a redemption story. I think we'll be folllowing her journey, wherever that may take us, even not onboard the U.S.S. Discovery...

I don't think Saru, or Doug Jones are going anywhere.

And even if Doug Jones left , they can just get any one of the three other Kelpians we saw to play Saru.

Well, two now... :shifty:

Thing is, Doug Jones typically keeps a very busy schedule, the dude's in so much all the time. It wouldn't surprise me to have him go film a boat load of scenes for multiple episodes of another series, then stay on to do ST:Disco.

A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

Star Trek: Discovery‘s Doug Jones (Saru) has joined the cast of FX‘s What We Do in the Shadows. Jones joins Beanie Feldstein,...

They lied to try and protect the story point of her leaving, I stopped watching TWD a long time ago so didn't care either way but you can see why they wouldn't want people to know one of their cast was leaving before their death scene (even though it was the worst kept secret in history.
It really is getting to the point that saying a character is being killed off of The Walking Dead barely qualifies as a spoiler. I'll only be surprised if Rick or Daryl get killed off.
