Bad Language in Discovery

I guess. That is so coitusly cool, would probably would suit Tilly better.
No one on Earth except Sheldon Cooper would ever possibly say that, and even he would find that awkward phrasing because coitusly is not a real word. People who say the dialogue sounded awkward and out of place now actually think replacing it with "That was so coitously cool" would work better?

And how is that any different in terms of dealing with a child? If you're uncomfortable talking to your child about sex, you now have to explain what that means. A child can learn that it's not appropriate to go around shouting the f-word in school, but they don't know the rules when it comes to this because no one uses it. Also, coitus only has one meaning, whereas the f-word has many uses, including as an expression of surprise and wonder like it was used in the episode.

To be fair. I brought up coitus. :p

Is fuck still on the bad list because it can refer to sex? If we said oh coitus!. Or that was coitus cool would that be different?
I'd say that my mother would have thought so (using coitus as a swear word is bad), and my grandparents would have for sure. Which is basically to say that I'm sure many people would agree. Not sure how many, though.

My mother's reaction would have been something like as to a child who learns that fuck is bad and tries a workaround instead, thinking that getting out of trouble on a technicality will work; letter vs spirit kind of thing. ;) The grounds would have been, be courteous to others who might consider it offensive.

Yeah I was just trying out the sounds of coitusly cool. Sort of nerdy like Tilly.

(Honestly I've been told off for saying shut up as a kid. Even saying 'sorry' for not hearing something. Like, what are you sorry for?) Parents or adults in your home as you grow up usually set the rules..

My siblings and I weren't allowed to say "shut up" to each other either, and we still don't.

It's good common coitusy.

Edit:

What a copulating thread...
Any kid under the tv-ma age who can read must be laughing their butts off.
(DONT google butt)

Recall the use of "frak" on the original 1978 Battlestar Galactica series, which aired on ABC. A clever workaround, but we all knew what Starbuck was really saying, didn't we.

Anyway, Lorca should have been the first one to say it.

Episode 37, Stamets watches some old South Park episodes and when he manages to upgrade the spore drive, says "that is totally tits!"

And the spore drive comes out of Stamets butt, like the satellite dish comes out of cartman's in 'cartman gets an anal probe'

Also it turns out that Tilly's hair is actually an orange hoody

Well telling people to shut up is rude and insulting to others, so you shouldn't be allowing your child to say it, imho. "That's so fucking cool" is an expression of excitement and wonder at something that is, well, fucking cool. Big difference.

Shut up ;)

It’s never been “more than TV”. That individuals have found inspiration from one or other of its iterations has ZERO bearing on what Trek itself is, and always has been—commercial entertainment. As such, it has NO “moral obligation” of any kind. Any sense that the audience is “owed” something inspiring is unwarranted entitlement, nothing more. We are NEVER “owed” satisfaction from any artistic endeavour.

Amazing how the aim now in discussion is not respect other people's opinions, it's to keep on pushing the other person until you can prove them "wrong". Keep on hammering... HAMMER HAMMER.

One’s right to hold an opinion deserves respect (you are certainly free to hold yours). Opinions themselves are not automatically owed respect, however. And the idea the audience is “owed” satisfaction is, objectively, incorrect.

Moreover, if you plan to advance an argument (as you have), you should expect it to receive a rebuttal when read by someone who finds it unpersuasive.

You are indisputably correct that Trek has inspired people to do various things and choose particular career paths. You are wrong to assert Trek owes its audience “inspiration”. No audience of any artistic work is “owed” anything but the work itself. Certainly not satisfaction. Of course, no artist is owed acceptance from the audience either.
