That was an interesting episode for a number of reasons. Not sure how I feel about Omega actually being force sensitive since that's a theory that's been knocking around since day one, and I was happy with her just being no more special than Boba in the preternatural gifts department. That said, I am forced to admit (no pun intended) that there is something of a consistent logic to it, both on the Kaminoan side of things, and in what we've observed of Omega herself.
In the former case, it may have been purely accidental that she wound up with both a HMC *and* the ability to maintain the m-count of donated tissue, or it could have at least been partly intentional on their part. Either as pure research for future commercial purposes (selling force sensitive clones would seem a very lucrative venture, after all), or as some kind of safeguard against working with Jedi/Sith. An army of chipped force sensitive clones loyal to Kamino was probably never going to work as an enterprise, but I can see them thinking it might.
As for the latter; Omega has consistently shown herself to been deeply empathetic, almost to a fault. A trait certainly not shared by her "doner", nor her quasi-brother. Her habitual sympathetic mimicry may even be a part of this. It's known that HMC infants do often display a natural ability in some specific skill, before it fades with age and the closing of the mind. If so, then Omega's natural gift seems similar to both Ahsoka's and Yoda's; the ability to see the truth in people and their intentions.
As for Ventress's part in all of this . . . if this is going to be her only appearance, I kind of wish they'd left her out of the trailer, because as good as it was seeing her in the mix, having a month to anticipate her appearance did rather take some of the excitement out of it. Also; for all the theorising about the Hidden Path or Voss potentially showing up; it was all rather low-key. That said; her interest in Omega was clearly protective, not profit motivated, so the hidden path connection isn't entirely off the table. Mostly she just seemed to want to know why someone was putting out feelers about m-counts into the underworld. I'd be willing to bet she came to see if this operation was a threat to the path. Once she saw that it wasn't, she was happy enough to leave them be.
We also only got one line even vaguely acknowledging the events of 'Dark Disciple', so no definitive answers as of yet on that front (not that I need them; there's enough in the book to infer what happened.) Either way, it's good to know she's still out there post-Clone Wars, and can show up in other projects (hopefully TotJ.)
Anyway, time for the notes of randomness; -
- Crosshair still walking around in full armour? That guy doesn't know how to relax, even for a minute. (That or they couldn't afford the extra asset for him in more casual wear.)
- I like the new ship design. Much smaller than the Banshee (which was totalled in the book, so it makes sense she got a new one.) Feels a little bit B-Wing, a little bit T-6. Maybe a little bit B-29 in there too? Feels like they referenced something specific from WWII but can't put my finger on it. (Exar Kun's ship also came to mind for some reason.) Either way, it looks like it's meant to be an old gunship, or heavy fighter of some sort.
- Witches always has to make an entrance. The old "light under the chin" gag was a little much though . . .
- So she not only tracked them down, but landed her ship in a cave, right under their noses? That's a scarily impressive.
- I think what I appreciate most about Ventress here is that you can feel the subtle change in her character. She hasn't become a whole different person; she's still herself, but that ragged, bitter edge to her is gone. She's at peace with herself.
- Wow. For a card hustler, Omega is shocking bad at lying.
- She said the m-word! (now everyone gasp in horror and clutch some pearls!)
- Anyone else get the impression that these tests are all exercises Ky Narec had her do? Doesn't feel like Dooku's training. Not enough stabbing.
- I never thought about it before, but Ventress and Omega would kind of make a perfect Master & Apprentice. The most terse, stand-offish person in the galaxy (besides Crosshair), with the galaxy's most inquisitive chatterbox. Trying to get a mind like Omega's to quiet itself would even test the patience of even Master Yoda, I think.
- Do you think they realise just how gentle she's being with them? I do like how much faster they made her fight; like a viper . . . which seems appropriate. Looks like they may have referenced some actual partial arts for a change.
- In all the kerfuffle, nobody noticed that Omega actually completed the random, impossible busy-work task Ventress just gave her to get her out of the way before the shooting started? Curious.
- You know, Ventress is just one of a handful of people who would know who Palaptine really is. Not at the time certainly, but she was in the presence of Sidious's hologram, and once the Republic became the Empire and Palpatine started making pronouncements in *that* hood and cloak, and the Jedi wiped out, she'd have been able to put two-and-two together. Also, Dooku would have talked about his vision of their future after the war, and it probably looked very similar to what's been going on.
- The new hilt is a curious choice. On the one hand they already used the one designed for 'Dark Disciple' for Maul's repaired sabre staff, so I get why they can't re-use it. But why go back the the curved hilt? What's the symbolism of wielding a blade like Dooku's, but a yellow blade? A return to the light? Or am I overthinking it and it's just her signature look, so why mess with it?
- The emitter actually looks identical to her old ones, while the grip design seems like neither Dooku's, nor the one's he gave her, but entirely her own. Maybe she somehow retrieved one of her old hilts and placed her yellow crystal in it? Or she just built a new one herself? Either way I don't think this is intended to be the hilt she bought on the black market. It's too specific to her. I also can't help be feel like the leather binding is something to do with her Dathomirian heritage.
- Anyone that doubted she'd returned to the light; this is your proof. Dark side Ventress wouldn't have been able to do this. Indeed there's an important scene in 'Dark Disciple' involving her having Voss summon an large, ancient creature from the waters, and killing it. This feels like a deliberate mirror to that scene.
- I am unreasonably impressed by the hair game in this scene. You can tell they worked hard to make Ventress hair to move like actual hair, not a slightly wobbly helmet like most hair in this style of animation. Underwater mohawk was a nice touch; I'm sure Katie Lucas would approve!
- Am I crazy, but was that gong sound the same from when Talzin knocked out Savage? Also; no force theme that I noticed. Very restrained.
- Crosshair offering a hand to Ventress? Most impressive, for both him and her.
- And there's out sideways allusion to her death. I don't know why, but the idea of Ventress being like a cat with nine lives does feel weirdly appropriate; she already did have a few metaphorical deaths an rebirths.
- First time getting a good look and the knife in her pack as she's walking away; looks culturally specific. Something from Dathomir, one assumes?
- Oh, that ship as a tail gunner position? So she mustn't always work alone . . . Voss confirmed?
