Background Music

I was thinking about this recently and there are a lot of shows that I like where I think that the music helps draw me to the show. One of those shows was, for a time, Battlestar Galactica where the music kept me coming back for more. Then today I was watching an episode of BSG Season two and turned the music off and didn't enjoy it as much.

Has anyone else had something like this happen? Are there any shows you can think of where the background music pretty much makes the show?

Well BSG has one of the best scores of any recent TV show, no question. The only person I feel who can compete with Bear McCreary on TV right now is Murray Gold, who's work on Dr. Who is outstanding. Easily the two finest composers working on TV at the moment.

Unfortunately most TV shows are unwilling to give their characters leitmotifs or themes of any sort, and aside from one or two familiar themes, generally some sort of heroic theme and sometimes a romantic theme, they're unwilling to have much consistence to their music which makes it boring and so much less satisfying to me as a regular viewer. Which is a real tragedy, because given one or more seasons and a character developing over the course of years, you could really tell an interesting story with just his or her theme changing over time.

Yeah, I'm finding myself incredibly fascinated by Doctor Who's music... There is some amazing, beautiful stuff on there. The end of "Gridlock", to me, was the best use of music and vocals in any TV show I've ever seen.
