Backdoor pilot?

Angry Fanboy

For me the season finale, particularly the last 5 minutes had 'backdoor pilot' written all over it. Whether they're planning a Pike series/miniseries or just keeping their options open, that entire final scene smacked of a jumping off point into something more and I can't believe it wasn't intentional.

Others may disagree but I'm not convinced by Peck I'm afraid, but Mount has been an absolute revelation and the unquestionable breakout character this season. For me he's eclipsed virtually everyone with perhaps the exception of Doug Jones who I just think is sublime as Saru. To a lesser extent Rebecca Romijn has impressed as well with what little she's had to do.

Plus the Enterprise herself, both inside and out, the atsonishing bridge set and that Cage-throwback shot in the dying seconds.

I can't see the powers that be not doing something with all this.

I'd watch it.

I kinda feel like all that talk about how the Enterprise bridge was built sturdy and out of metal wasn't so much that they'd be reusing it, but because they went in knowing they'd be like, extremely violent with it in final episode.

they went to a lot of touble to bring these characters to the screen , would be a shame not to see a show based on pike and co

Peck was... okay. Honestly I thought he sold the role better in that final scene than the entire rest of the season. He was fine as a peculiar Vulcan, but never quite felt like Spock until the end. Of course, that was mostly the point of his arc this season, so that's a tough call.

Mount was amazing. They managed to give us exactly the kind of Pike the show needed. I find it hard to say anything that isn't just glowing adulation. He conveyed so much between lines with just his glances and expressions.

Romijn was pretty good, what little we had. No one can save an "In English Please?" line from making their character look like an arrogant idiot, so I can't blame her for that one. She has plenty of potential.

The ship needs tweaks, but it's most of the way there. If these things all come together for a new show, I'm ready to see what the future holds.

I only really liked Spock's character based on his relationship with Michael. I mean, there's nothing wrong with Peck as Spock for me, but what was really engaging was the story that he was part of. I don't think I'd be all that interested in seeing this version of Spock just doing the Spock thing. And also, he's no fun to look at without his beard, hair, and outfit.

I loved Pike, but was a little disappointed in Spock.
But love or hate these characters and how they were portrayed, its inevitable that there will be a Pike/Enterprise/Star Trek
They have to

Mount said he's not opposed, but methinks he's gonna play hard-to-get.

Well, if you're champing at the bit they can get you for fifty cents.

Mount's concern, though, seems to be more with the lengthy shooting schedule for STD - and it was fucking ridiculous - in a place distant from home. He's still relatively recently married, and the work hours and effort were apparently pretty consuming.

You see if Stewart agrees to work for eight months away from home for a ten hour show. Won't happen.

Honestly, the way the finale was scripted and filmed makes me seriously think at the time it was shot there were concerns the show might be canceled, and they wanted to have a season finale which didn't end on a cliffhanger, instead having some cloture to allow for the possibility that it was actually the end of the story for the Discovery crew. It might be at the time they were planning on a Pike spinoff only if Discovery totally bombed in the second season - in effect rebooting the Trek franchise with a new "flagship" show. But the show performed well enough to warrant another season, meaning they now need to consider developing both of them.

If shorter seasons, say 6 to 8 episodes, cuts down on the production schedule to address Mount’s concerns, I’m all for it!

Each show should have its own pacing and tone anyway.

I’m beginning to think that the Pike, Peck, Enterprise show is going to bump the Section 31 show. I bet they keep Georgiou on as part of it too.

I’ve seen others speculate that the S31 show was a cover or placeholder for the new Enterprise based show. Fingers crossed!

You could tell the 8 month shoot for this season wore on him in recent interview

Think he most definitely would come back, just needs things streamlined a bit in terms of production

posted this earlier, but Pike series without Kurtzman n current showrunner n writers with say a Frakes or someone of the like would be Gold

Game of Thrones shoots for about six months.

Game of F-ing Thrones.

If these folks can't figure out how to shoot ten hours of TV in less than 8 months, CBS needs to get new people.

Frakes is a great director, but that doesn't mean he's a showrunner. Showrunners are usually people who "move on up" from writing room assignments, and Frakes doesn't have a lick of experience on that side.

I can only hope this is a backdoor pilot. I would love to see a Pike/Enterprise show in some form, because there are plenty of stories to tell there that can be done without violating cannon, especially if they actually explore. There's many races as part of the Fed that we don't know how they were discovered/contacted. Plenty of room for growth and expansion there. Would be fun.

He's directed multiple ST movies and dozens of episodes, he's not in the writer's room. He's far beyond that n can handle the task easily n much better than the current clown show, IMO

Not saying he's the end all be all, he or someone of his ilk would be major step in a better direction, IMO
