I agree. New Frontier was at its best when was a series about a crew on a ship.

I was wondering if perhaps that was why he went so far with the attack on the Trident in Treason. Maybe he was starting to work on narrowing down the number characters in the series.Perhaps we'll see a return to this at some point? IIRC there's never been a mention of USS Trident outside of the New Frontier books?

I'm sure there was a name-drop of both Excalibur and Trident in Destiny too, wasn't there?

Excalibur certainly was. it was a whole little thing about them destroying a cube with technobabble torpedoes.
While I've still been enjoying the series overall, I do somewhat agree with you here. The last few years worth of stories have definitely been several steps down in quality from the earlier ones. IMO they've gone from awsome to Ok. I still like the characters, and I've liked the stories enough that I'll continue with the series as long as it's around, but I will not be at all disappointed if this is the last book. This really doesn't interest me one bit.
I think the stories for NF are once again getting more and more outrageous.
Why does every story need to be about something going horrifically wrong and shaking the very foundations of the Federation or Starfleet.
What about having a good old adventure yarn?
NF is nothing more than a novelized fanwank comic in tone, and dare I say it, substance. I understand poking fun at Trek and looking at its lighter side, but NF seems to go way overboard 99% of the time, and it just ends up as poor slapstick comedy. While I've still been enjoying the series overall, I do somewhat agree with you here. While it is outrageous at times, I find NF to be one of the most unique in tone ST series out there. I laugh and snicker at many moments in the book. Without out a doubt NF is an adventure, but is an adventure series that focus on its characters and in trying to be an entertaining and fun read. It does that every time IMHO.

It also outsells most other ST novel series, so we don't all agree it is fanwank or "poor" slapstick comedy.![]()
I seem to recall John Ordover once saying that NF outsold several other Trek series at the time, but he's been gone for many years now. Has anyone said anything about NF sales in the last five or six years?
