Babylon 5: Awesome!

Muppets.

I have ZERO interest in ever seeing Farscape.

I was exactly the same way at first. I watched the first 3 or 4 episodes and decided I didn't like Farscape. One day at my girlfriend's house I watched a mini marathon. I started getting interested and soon I fell in love with it. They do such a good job with the "muppets" that after awhile you see them as "real" living creatures. If you give it another shot, you might like it too.
Ain't gonna happen. Whenever I've peaked in on the series it never held me.

I'm open minded about muppets in sci-fi.

Stargate's Thor was fantastic. He would never have been as likable as a guy in makeup ("hey, anyone notice how Thor looks like Daniel Jackson in grey face paint and a skull cap?" )

Parts of the series are lame. Parts of it are okay. Parts of it are epic. And parts are simply a lot of fun.

Whether you realize it or not, make no mistake: You are missing out.

Actually, the problem with Farscape is much the same as it is on B5: The early parts are the least interesting, and yet for some statistically curious reason, also the most likely to be randomly seen on TV.

^^ As I've said in another thread: if it doesn't interest you then you're not missing anything.

Nice in theory, but still wrong, as I found out. For years I had no interest whatsoever in Buffy. Believe me, I *was* missing something, I just didn't know it.

I hear ya on the Buffy (and Angel). It wasn't until my best friend sat me down and made me watch it about 2 years ago that I fell in love with it. This was after I sat him down and made him watch Farscape, BSG, and Firefly.

I'm trying to convince him to watch B5 because I really do think he'll enjoy it, but this summer we are going to focus on LOST. He has insisted on waiting until the entire show is over before he gets involved.

I also have to mention the hologram weapons thing from Legend of the Rangers. Who's idea was that?!?!

Why not? Sure, the execution left some to be desired, but really - how many variations of "shots of people firing by pressing buttons" do you need to see before you get tired of it all? At last they tried!

Y'know, there are perfectly valid reasons to dislike Farscape, but you picked THAT ONE?

Or have you not realized that you have been a fan of a "Muppet" show all these years? :guffaw:
That's right, B5 had a "Muppet" main character from the beginning too - Kosh :techman:

Just something to think about. I'm not saying you have to see it...

You might find Farscape disjointed , crazy , campy , too weird initially and might not be interested. I understand though not agree. There are several series I don't like or I am not interested also due to various reasons. But Muppets ?....It is not an excuse. I mean Yoda is a Muppet. Does that make Star Wars Ep : V The Empire Strikes Back a bad movie ? No it is not. Because of the universe created and excelent voice acting of Frank Oz Yoda seems like a real character like in that sci-fi/fantasy enviroment. In Farscape Jonathan Hardy's voice acting on Rygel is equally excellent if not better. So is Lani Tupu's voice dubbing on Pilot. As mentioned above they became real characters with excellent writing and voice acting. You do not get the sense that both Rygel or Pilot are puppets moved with elegance. "But they are puppets , Muppets" Come on ! In creating a real sense of alien or fantasy universe I actually prefer one or two puppets ( if done good as in Farscape ) to actors in prostetics , weird costumes or wrinkled forehead or CGI characters.

Another thing is all Farscape cast interacted with puppet characters like Rygel or Pilot extremely well. As if they were real. This is not an easy thing to do. It gave a sense of reality to these characters in Farscape.

Same thing in Babylon 5 also. Kosh is nothing but a walking encounter suit. Does it lower the quality of series ? No. Important thing is writing , characters....and although B5 faltered more than a few times in some bad episodes its five year main story is second to none.

Actually muppets aren't the reason. The show just doesn't interest me. I'm not saying it's bad. it just doesn't interest me.

West Wing was an excellent show and very well done, but it just couldn't hold me.

I bought the Complete B5 universe on DVD two Christmasses ago. I haven't finished it yet, because for me it was a struugle at times to get through. I absolutely loathed the first series. From the horrible production design, poor visual effects and terrible acting. I even though the scripts were mediocre at best, especially compared to what TNG and DS9 were doing at the time.

I really liked seasons three and four though. Solid and exciting storytelling. Season 5, unfortunately, was a mess again. Aimless and dull.

The complete set also contains all the movies and the spin-ff series, but I;m very hesitant to continue.

Unfair Judgement. Rigel is only one character. And he's an interesting character. And often funny.

This is like fans not wanting to watch Star Trek TOS because of William Shatner.

Although, THAT I can understand.

Lay off the guy. As much as I like Farscape, badgering him won't make him go watch it, let alone like it.

I'm jealous of everyone who gets to watch these shows for the first time.

Don't be... If you watch the DVD's of any program, you're getting a far superior experience.
Farscape starts next? I hate you a little bit. I wanna watch it, too!

I held off of Farscape because of the muppets. However, last year my wife and I watched it all the way through... the result was that I found that while I was never able to warm to the muppets, I really didn't like the program itself. My wife absolutely disliked it and rates it as one of the top three worst programs we've watched all the way through (1st place is reserved for Space 1999).

Babylon 5? Great program that shone through low budgets and CGI on training wheels, but turned into merely good by the "we're ending/now we're not ending at the end of season 4" dilemma. That really screwed the program out of greatness. As has been stated it made the actual Shadow War seem like a Dues Ex Machina. Too much ramping up for 3.5 years to find... we fixed it! Get out of our galaxy! Not to mention it left them using filler for all of season 5, as the main story had been so foreshortened. But the characters of Londo Mollari & G'kar were so well written, developed and acted that they could make the whole viewing worth it.

Well, yeah, the first time I watched it was on DVD, but that doesn't mean I don't want to experience it again for the first time.

Sad. Farscape is and ever shall be my favorite show of all time.

I obviously mistook your meaning. Re-watching something a decade or two later can often get a lot of that feeling back though (assuming the quality was there to begin with).

Why sad? I've got other shows that I enjoy. Repeatedly. To each their own. I only bring up my "un-enjoyment" to show that "Your Mileage May Vary," not to bash it. Not everything is for everyone.

You have every right to enjoy that piece of trash that proves what happens when Muppets go bad and take too much "LDS**", then barf all over the script. *grin* (really, I am just kidding on the not-bash it theme!)

In a vaguely similar vein, I want everyone to hate the new BSG as much as I do

But imagine how dull these forums (and life) would be if we all felt exactly the same!

I think I'll like Farscape. I loved Stargate, and not only is that a little silly, but it ended up with a couple of ex-Farscapers in it.
