Babble or Baybel?

Having watched the final episode of TAS, The Counter Clock Incident, this morning I discovered yet another Kuklakhan and Orry On moment courtesy of William Shatner and the other members of the team!
This episode mentions Babel and the nova of Beta Niobe, both of which were mentioned in the classic series episodes of Journey To Babel and All Our Yesterdays! Here Captain Kirk is transporting Commodore Robert April to the Babel planetoid and passes by the dead star of Beta Niobe but in this animated episode he calls it Babble and Better Niobe instead of Baybel and Baetar Niobe! Then later on someone else makes the same mistake! My question is if the writers can go to so much trouble to add these famous names to the show then why can't Shatner say them correctly like he did earlier on in the TV series? And why wasn't he corrected before it was transmitted? :wah::weep:

Perhaps it's down to the differing formats, in the TV series you might have the director who picks up on the error and does another take, for the animated show it might just have been Shatner and a technician doing the recording in a single take so the error wasn't picked up.

Maybe but didn't the Shat remember how to pronounce these names from the live action shows? I mean Beat is pronounced Baeta and not Better, even the Shat should know that!

I think you mean Beta not Beat besides can't it also be pronounced Bee-ta?

Babel can also be pronounced Ba-Bel or Bay-bel, the later more so when referring to the Tower of Babel, the former when it's a confusing noise of multiple voices.

There's a famous TAS audio outtake in which Shatner does not take kindly to a director correcting him on how to pronounce sabotage. "Don't tell me how to do it. It sickens me." And he wasn't the kind of actor to stay familiar with TOS reruns and thus remember how he said things the first time.

I'm pretty sure when Shatner said "I lost a brother once" in Star Trek V, he had no Earthly idea that Kirk lost a brother in "Operation: Annihilate." Old scripts are forgotten things to him, over and done. We're the ones who memorize that stuff.

Ooops! Did I say Beat instead of Beta? Sorry chaps! :D It can be said as Beeta as well, although Baeta is the norm these days but not Better, surely!

Yeah I was thinking of poor old George Samuel too at the time until I realised he was talking about Spock!

Shatner didn't really get into or fully embrace his inner Trekness until after TAS. Today I think he would remember the pronunciation of those names or ask to be sure.

Wonder if he ever rewatches TOS? If they do another DVD/BR version for some reason, a commentary track with him would be pure gold.

Babel is supposed to be pronounced "Babble" when referring to the Biblical Tower. That's intended as the origin of the modern word, its definition, and its pronunciation. I don't know who's responsible for that, but it's what I have been told for as long as I can remember.

The OED indicates that “no direct connexion with Babel can be traced.”

English is full of words which are spelt the same but pronounced differently sometimes but always this is dependent on the context they are being used.

The recording sessions for TAS weren't typically done with all of the actors in the same room the way some other animated shows were. I've that when Shatner and Nimoy were on the road for some other acting gig they would just find a local recording studios, cut their lines, and literally mail their performances in. That's why you sometimes hear different characters pronounce the same word in different ways.

Yep. Shatner's much more about moving forward than looking back.

I doubt it. Shatner has said in interviews that he hates watching himself onscreen, so I doubt he'd ever rewatch TOS for pleasure. And as much as I'd love to hear him do a commentary track on TOS episodes, I feel like that ship has sailed. If he were going to do it, he would have done it already.

Enh, dunno. I love him hosting the TWOK showings. I can hope.

VO directors know better than to correct Shat's delivery. :techman:

My favorite is "Or-Ion" in "Journey to Babel" vs "Or-Eon" in "The Pirates of Orion" when they are the same species.

Although, Shatner and Nimoy did a joint commentary for TVH and another with his daughter for TFF.
