Hi sorry for the title in CAPS, I wanted to get everyone’s attention

My thoughts and insights to the new star trek film and why it is so awesome, a lot of what I talk about I don’t believed has been mentioned so that’s why im here and that’s way you so read it

I am a film school graduate and as such can see the film in a way or light that others can’t or don’t, im not saying im better then you just that I know what im talking about because hopefully one day I will be making films like this one, so please read what I have to say and give me your feedback

So here we go, please bear with me given the length, it will be worth the read trust me

  • One of the fundamental reasons is something that is also so simple the movie was shot of 35mm film! DIGITAL FILM SUCKS, its what ruined episode 2 and 3 and it is what will ruin Public Enemies because Michael Mann seems to have fallen in love with it, Spielberg doesn’t like so what does that tell you… Star Trek looked so beautiful because it was shot on film, so was the Phantom Menace so regardless of how you felt about episode 1 it looked better then 2 and 3. they looked so fake with the blue/green screen and its simply because digital makes the image too perfect and comes off looking fake and not real (hopefully you get what I mean)

  • There was little to no green/blue screen (THANK GOD) we all know the problem with doing it that way, and given what Stargate and Battlestar can achieve with sets and locations you can’t tell me that you couldn’t do the same with a new sci fi/star wars movie, George just like the fact that its easy to do it with nothing behind you (easy but not better and you need deep pockets like him)

  • On another note regarding what was said above, CGI should be used for wideshots of fiction cities, expanding a shot, everything in space, Star Trek balanced it well by using real location shots and adding to them the 22nd or 23rd century elements through CGI, rather then going fully CGI (once again like star wars)

  • One of the things I really enjoyed and I what I thought was refreshing was the plot idea of young fresh graduates thrusted into a dangerous mission while being lead by seasoned older leaders (Naruto, Final Fantasy 8 off the top of my head) its a great idea to go with as the inexperienced characters who survive come out of it almost like battle hardened soldiers, it’s a much better story device to have your young team thrown into the deep in as it were rather then a nice progressive flow into danger and missions after graduating for star feet

  • The opening sequence was very interesting as it avoided showing you typical wide shots where you have the entire ship moving while in frame. When the Kelvin was under attack we get very specific shots that give you different and usual points of view from the battle (following the missiles as they hit the Kelvin etc)

  • Did anyone else notice that there was a hot blonde with short hair in the enterprise bridge, I think you only see her in one shot which is used as a random reaction shot from other people on the bridge besides the main characters, it was used after something dramatic happened, can’t remember what it was though

  • See how Star Trek used elements of Star Wars and Superman and made a wicked movie! (Star Wars in not the problem George Lucas is)

  • This re imaging is the trek equivalent of the Battlestar re imagining, although not a TV show and star trek was made to be more adventure then Battlestar you can see how Battlestars new approach to sci fi had effect star trek in the way the ships move, the uniforms and the military nature of both BS and ST and generally making thing more believable and legitimizing the everyday stuff (like on the bridge, that chatter and movement both Kelvin and enterprise) I mean it was just like what navy battle chaos and chatter would be like expect in space

  • THE MUSIC! Man I love lost and I love the lost music so having the same guy doing the music for this was awesome. And I the only one who though that the orchestra build up at the start when we saw the bad robot image, it was getting louder and louder and to me that was a tool to get people amped and ready for something big.

  • It made you feel like a kid again when watching it in the cinema and that is what its all about

I'm sure there are other things I could write but my point is make like some many franchise that have gone way in the wrong direction that god that JJ Abrams can along and gave us what bond and batman fans got, now if only we can get the ultimate Star Wars movie that isn't pure green screen digital film crap.

by the way I like both Star Trek and Star Wars (the originals and Ep1)

I want your feedback and to add anything that has not be said or mention somewhere else please

Re: AWESOME THOUGHTS ON STAR TREK XI BY FILM GRADUATE PLEASE READ EVER

also forgot to add that you don't need to have so much shaky cam, you can achieve the look of having the camera free flow and moving around without the shakiness its called a stedicam!

Re: AWESOME THOUGHTS ON STAR TREK XI BY FILM GRADUATE PLEASE READ EVER

Is Naruto high on the list of film graduate studies?

Re: AWESOME THOUGHTS ON STAR TREK XI BY FILM GRADUATE PLEASE READ EVER

Yeah, I noticed that blonde chick too.

Re: AWESOME THOUGHTS ON STAR TREK XI BY FILM GRADUATE PLEASE READ EVER

I think that everyone can agree the movie looks great, and sounded great. That's not in dispute here. Where people have problems with is the writing.

But just for myself, i would of preferred less shaky cam, and less lens flares, and slow the pace down a bit, to make it feel alot less like a video game trailer.

Re: AWESOME THOUGHTS ON STAR TREK XI BY FILM GRADUATE PLEASE READ EVER

Film graduate, huh? All that schooling and your brilliant insights are "less lens flare" and "there's a hot chick on the bridge"?

I'm so happy you put it in all caps so I was sure not to miss your stunning analysis.

Re: AWESOME THOUGHTS ON STAR TREK XI BY FILM GRADUATE PLEASE READ EVER

I noticed the blonde woman because she was beautiful, striking and like an ice maiden. She stood out. I wondered immediately if she was going to become someone of import in the film.

Re: AWESOME THOUGHTS ON STAR TREK XI BY FILM GRADUATE PLEASE READ EVER

There was a blond woman?

I also liked the blond woman's make-up.

why you gotta be a prick about it this is my first post and what do ya know someone on the internet is being rudehttp://www.trekbbs.com/member.php?u=10605

if you could get inside my brain you would be blown away by the stories and characters I have thought up. these films of mine could make millions of dollars one day.

I may have mistitled the thread, I wasn't going to analysis the hell out of the movie the point was to mention things that had not been mentioned and the reason I put the whole film grad was to set up that im not like everyone else and to draw people in. I had way too many thoughts and opinions on the film to write it all down, put trust me if you knew me you would take back those mean comments

Be that as it may, there's a difference between having brilliant thoughts and communicating them effectively, and at least in this thread, you have failed spectacularly at the latter. There are a ton of stunningly literate critiques around here, and most of the sentences you've posted aren't even coherent.

I'm not being mean or rude when I say this, but probably not.

I'm from the United States and we made Star Trek, Iron Man, The Dark Knight, Shindler's List, Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Matrix, just to name a few. It doesn't make me Martin Scorsese. You're coming across as very arrogant and pompous. I'm not sure if that's what you intend, but it's what people are seeing.

your right i didn't communicate effectively, it can fast and off the top of my head, it was more just a few thoughts I wanted to share I thought you would have at least gotten that. I am more effect at talking in person rather then writing my feeling down

so a you a aspiring film maker too?

those films aren't the problem, the point is that I would rather be an outsider looking in at all the American cliches and problems then being an American, while a few do it right like JJ Abrams. Americans are for the most part going in the wrong direction and are making crap movies. American would have ruined LOTR not a awesome new zealander like peter jackson

Your opinion, of course. In terms of artistic merit, the United States has produced some stellar movies.

Re: AWESOME THOUGHTS ON STAR TREK XI BY FILM GRADUATE PLEASE READ EVER

yes they have but you should be able to appricate the idea of an outsider being able to see whats wrong with Hollywood and then proceed to fix it or work around it, so many people keep going with the same old unoriginal crap and alot of non Americans with great ideas from my generation (GEN Y) will come along and show people how its done

Re: AWESOME THOUGHTS ON STAR TREK XI BY FILM GRADUATE PLEASE READ EVER

Can somebody post a screen cap of this "blond woman" that I missed, and everybody is talking about.
