If you happen to be near Huntsville tomorrow you might see a guppy flying in the sky. A super guppy, in fact! Super Guppy is almost 70 years old and still flying parts for Artemis program.

Think it was Discovery Channel's Megaplanes that had an episode on the Superguppy.

One of the recent trends I have seen are folks on the internet tracking the use of aviation---air-shaming I call it. Yet aviation is a much more efficient form of transportation:
https://techxplore.com/news/2022-08-drones-parcels-energy-parcel-diesel.html

I remember a video where an ultralight made better time than a Dodge Viper (both red by the way) and used little fuel---I can't find that video however.

It's more efficient if you're part of Economy class on a regular Airliner.

If you're part of any class higher than Economy, then the efficiency goes out of the window.

That's why I want all major Airlines to be a "Econonmy Only" or re-branded as "Regular Class" seats for all seats.

Any form of nicer class seats goes on a seperate smaller private airplane and should be re-branded as "Premium Class".

and again.. quad-jet, though just on the design table
American Airlines just Pre-Ordered 20 Overture aircraft from Boom Aerospace.

That puts their combined total order books at 206 aircraft.
With big customers like "Virgin Group", "Japan Airlines", "United Airlines", "American Airlines" on their order books; I have a feeling that this startup will have to & will most likely deliver on "Overture".

Yes, they had to revise their stats due to model simulation results, but that's just part of natural R&D.

I like the final design, but AA just adding 20 more Pre-Orders is a big deal considering that you can't pre-order for cheap and the pre-order fees with Boom Aerospace is "Non-refundable".

I agree. this is a big deal. That's a lot of orders for a company that doesn't even seem to have bent metal. But it should also get them whatever funding they need to roll forward.

I am pleasantly surprised.

Perhaps this is fallout of SpaceX.

Seeing one caddy probably learns more than any five MBAs, my guess is that this may be due to some old money...perhaps lamenting their oldest member---an aerospace-man recovering from a stroke--not being at the 19th watering hole with his fellow duffers:

"We'll show that kid Elon. I miss Concorde. Too many folks, though---just millionaire riff-raff. We just need a ride to LIV that doesn't give me a blood-clot from sitting on a 767 for hours with all those poors." ;)

Go J79 and forget the costs?

Rolls Royce is their engine partner and they'll figure out their Medium ByPass engine that they want.

Unfortunately, no off-the-shelf comercial engine meets their requirements obviously.

And any Military Engine doesn't meet their reliability criteria; not to mention arms control restrictions by all nations states involved.

So they're going for a brand new engine w/o AfterBurner that suits their needs and is optimized for "The Overture".

Hopefully Boeing doesn't buy them up mid-development and fuck it all up. Though oddly enough, if anyone were to try to buy them Northrop-Grumman seems to have a pretty even hand on their acquisitions, lately.

LockMart seems to have their heads screwed on a bit better---Taiclet being a pilot might be a good thing.

Turbulence news
https://phys.org/news/2022-08-physicists-uncover-dynamical-framework-turbulence.html
Now, physicists from the Georgia Institute of Technology have demonstrated—numerically and experimentally—that turbulence can be understood and quantified with the help of a relatively small set of special solutions to the governing equations of fluid dynamics that can be precomputed for a particular geometry, once and for all.

On Friction
https://phys.org/news/2022-09-counterintuitive-friction-effect.html
Typically, the faster the two surfaces slide past each other, the greater the wear. But at extremely high speeds, comparable to the muzzle velocity of a firearm, this can be reversed: Above a certain speed, the wear decreases again. This surprising and seemingly contradictory result has now been explained using computer simulations by the Research Unit Tribology at TU Wien and the Austrian Excellence Center for Tribology (AC2T research GmbH) in Wiener Neustadt in cooperation with Imperial College in London.

New welding tech

Aluminum/steel dissimilar metal welding technology has broad application prospects in the context of automotive light-weighting.

A firefighter from London Ontario has found himself a good way to kill some time.

He found the engine off a B-29 on E-bay and decided to purchase it as a restoration project.

The engineer is believed to have gone on to completed bomber that never saw combat before being sold on.

Initially he'll just be doing it for presentation but down the track a more detailed restoration could be undertaken thought that would a pile of time and money (but could result in an engine worth $200k).

Saw a Dragonfly up close, there's one in a Dutch museum, always loved these because of the rather retro SF shape of it. :mallory:

I am surprised no one thought of this earlier
https://www.secretprojects.co.uk/threads/my-xv1-vortex.40028/

I had a dream once where there were two curved fuselages to either side of an Uber high by-pass engine on a gimbal/pivot…that would always face forward even when the nose(s) rotated. Four sets of landing gear—car layout…the two fuselages moved towards each other and clamshells over the center engine with the now single fuselage one teardrop shape with an annular ramjet in the tail…wild.
