I liked the Phantom too, though here most were reengined with the Spey as mentioned above. (The only exceptions I'm aware of were the F4-Js we picked up later)?
I seem to remember that a Mach 3 version was looked at...

The pedant in me is twitching. The F-35.. not going to call it Lightning, this pudgy little flying Bradley doesn't deserve that name.. it is one of the few aircraft I don't like.
@Santaman The aviators will probably stick the F-35 with it's own unofficial moniker anyway. Like Warthog for the A-10 or Viper for the F-16.
I didn't!I don't think any of us in this thread have said Phantom II, though.
The Phantom was fugly.![]()

The F-35 is the Lightning II.
The Lightning was the P-38.

According to the Wikipedia article, a nickname in use for the F-35 in the USAF is "Panthner."
Perhaps until jamming tech catches up and severs the link with the remote pilots. Then (and even otherwise), wholly onboard AI is a plausible next step, or at least partial AI integration for rapid decision loops. But also, in a highly jammed environment, some measure of at least nearby pilot presence could still be a thing. And in a while air combat is going to be without pilots and use swarms of drones and anti drones and anti anti drones.. all controlled by pimply 14 year olds with a gaming addiction..![]()
