I like the Alia as well.

It's a truly innovative design that puts a heavier emphasis on being an aircraft with the fuselage of a helicopter.

The VTOL function is designed in a way to allow it to takeoff & and land only with no optimization for hovering.

That's the right call IMO for maximizing your range & flexibility.

Yeah saw that on the news. What the heck were they trying to do? It's not like you can turn there.

They weren't trying to turn. According to some reports, there was a sand storm and 30+ mph winds running across the Suez canal that day. They literally couldn't see where they were going and got pushed sideways.

Large container ships have had issues with "sail area" before. Sorta similar to the issues older high-sided sailing ships (Carracks, Galleons etc...) had in the old days. The hull acts like a sail in a cross-wind making the gain a bit too much leeway. In a narrow canal - that's a VERY bad thing.

On the other hand, the captain of that ship has also had issues with poor management of ships in the past so...how much was actually due to the weather combined with the ship - and how much was his fault..?

Well if it was weather related I don't know how much you can blame the captain for, especially if they did try everything they could to avoid being in the situation they are now in.

It didn't take long

There are training schools with miniature tankers with purposely bad handling for training. Lots of goodness in Professional Mariner magazines. If I was rich, I’d love to have salvors dive to military ships to get consoles for ship bridges. Do a search on supertanker school at bay geo.

In terms of planes, I miss the Megaforce Backlash and Megaforce Stratofortress toys...

I saw the movie didn't know they had merchandise for it. Didn't the movie kind of bomb?

It did. I am not sure it was related like the hot wheels offering. Wonderful non stealth designs. I wonder what fighters would look like if stealth is defeated. Of interest: http://up-ship.com/blog/?p=46237

Not planes--but here is a very interesting ship--the Flurry brought to life--The Ramform Titan:
https://www.snafu-solomon.com/2018/12/a-very-unusual-looking-shipthe-ramform.html

Pioneering Spirit
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pioneering_Spirit
the design featured a lifting system at its bows for lifting platform topsides up to 48,000 tonnes
https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/heavy-lift-vessel

That's even more than the 20,000 ton Taisun crane
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taisun

The hooks of some cranes are 400 tons

Elon uses this I think

Gullfaks C was the largest object ever moved at 1.5 million tons (it being a Condeep). More massive even than Troll A.

Hey Folks,
I'm new around here.

If you folks are science fiction aviation fans, you might get a kick out of my comic strip, "21st Century Fox."
I'm just finishing up an aviation heavy storyline.

I've been using C-82 Packets, Superguppies, F-104s, Mig 242s, French BR-765s, Tiltrotors and others.
If you enjoy such things, the storyline starts here:

Have fun!

Hi, tip: do post your comic in the trek art forum, you will most likely get more people looking at it.
Hmm, Mig 242?

What about probably the most famous fictional aircraft ever?:D

Thanks, I'll have to put together some kind of promotional Teaser or something. The comic has been online since 1998, and yeah, I have a lot of fun sneaking Trek type references in it, but I'm afraid the mods would say it's off topic. I've drawn some Star Trek art:

and I'll get around to posting it eventually.

But, if folks like airplanes, I hope they'll enjoy the comic.

As for drawing the F-19, well, I did sneak in the Mig-31 Firefox...

Hey Folks,

I dunno if you'll be interested, but here's a video about Jack Leynnwood.
He was an amazing Aviation Artist who painted artwork for the boxes of aviation models.

The Deal of a Century jet needs fleshing out.

Now, I seem to remember the Buck Rogers Thunderfighter sold as a stealth kit. Was I dreaming or was that a thing?

There were several different f-19 model kits available representing the varied speculation about the supposed top secret plane. This article has images of the two I remember, one from Testor and one from Monogram. I owned and built the Testor one back in the day.
https://hushkit.net/2018/05/25/the-f-19-stealth-fighter-would-it-have-worked-in-the-real-world/

I had the Monogram one but never the F117 as a kit. Also had the fictional Russian Stealth one (can't remember who made that kit though).

The Mi-24 got a mention a while back - for anyone who's interested, here's a walk around video on one that's now flown in the U.S.

The guy who made the video has a whole pile of aviation videos (seems to be his livelyhood).
