Avery Brooks

JeffOakland

Lieutenant Junior Grade
Red Shirt
Is it true Brooks quickly grew tired of DS9 and wanted to leave as early as the 2nd season but felt professionally obligated to honor his contract?

Where did you hear that? I think all the casts' contracts were up for renewal after season 6, if he wanted out he would not have agreed to an extension.

I think by then the show had improved enough that he had come around and was willing to see the series through.

What I've read here and there is he wanted to leave but he had signed a contract. He felt it would set a poor example for his kids and and as the 1st black captain to renege on a deal so he honored his contract. I don't think he expressed these thoughts at the time. They've come out in interviews after the show ended.

The character seemed to hit his stride in season three. If Brooks had quit DS9 early in the series, I think things would have turned out much differently, since Sisko's character arc ended up being so integral to the overall story. If Brooks had left the series early, I wonder if he would have tried to get a lead role in a different show, or if he would have done more theater work.

I think it's rather interesting that in recent years he has been very involved with theater arts in academia.

...like Brian Brophy. :shifty:

It is something Brooks has said. He has said that he stuck with it as an example to his son of sticking to your word. The way he talks about it isn't that he didn't enjoy or see value in his character, but it seems more of the realities of having to film 20+ episode long seasons.

Brooks was mentioned by Winston Duke (the new Hawk) in a recent interview:

"Avery Brooks’ turn as Hawk was so meaningful for black viewers who got to see this cool, debonair black brother who was doing an unorthodox job at the time and just killing it. It was really great when it came to representation onscreen. It’s such an honor now to be picking up the baton in this relay, to have my own version of Hawk that’s very much a product of the present.”

WTF! No glasses, no cool clothes, no scowl! 25% Hawk.

Patrick Stewart was the same way, not even unpacking during the first season of TNG.

I thought Patrick wasn't sure if TNG would succeed so he was unsure what to do?
I don't remember any talks about Stewart wanting to leave the show after it got more popular.

His contract was up after "Best Of Both Worlds" IIRC. Thankfully, they worked it out and he played Picard for 4 more seasons, 4 movies and now a new show.
