Avery Brooks; open up!

Have any of the "modern" Trek actors written about their time in the Trek universe? It might be interesting to hear some first-hand accounts from the people involved, with the understanding that all the stories would have to be taken at face value.

The only one I'm aware of is Wil Wheaton. His TNG episode reviews are off-the-hook hilarious, and one of his books he's written has a lot of TNG-era stuff. I've only seen excerpts, it's highly entertaining writing.

Myself personally, not you guys, if it is revealed one of these days by Ira Behr or any cast member from DS9 that Avery Brooks felt about Star Trek like the way Alan Rickman's character felt about portraying his fictional alien character in Galaxy Quest, it would not surprise me one bit.

He has said on occasion that he was uncomfortable with starring in a fantasy program. He's always been respectful of it though.

In turn, I respect his efforts to use a fantasy program to frame some very provocative issues (well, provocative for a Berman-era show at least) and lend the writers a hand.

First of all, I've seen Avery Brooks at a convention, and I thought he was very nice and quite open with the fans. He really had a good time, and told us so.

That said, Avery Brooks has never been lacking for work and he is not one of those Trek actors who cling to Star Trek like a toddler clings to a blankie because they don't have anything else on their resume worth having.

Brooks was successful before Star Trek, and he has been successful since. Perhaps not in the way YOU think he should have been successful (more Trek or scifi related projects seem to be a favorite measurement of 'success' around here), but certainly by the standards with which he himself measures success.

So he doesn't go to every Star Trek convention, eager to cash in on Sisko at every possible opportunity. Big deal. I respect him for that - certainly more than I respect Marina Sirtus, who, despite the fact that she's such a terrible actress that she can't get a gig which doesn't have 'Star Trek' in the name, bashes DS9 at every opportunity.

I respect Avery Brooks. Star Trek was a job, and he was done with the job years ago. He doesn't need a bunch of nerd-love at conventions to bolster his ego...nor his bank account.

Good for him!

You mean, DS9 was *just a TV show*?!?!?!?!:eek::eek:

Imagine that, and I have you QFT. :techman:

Having only seen him at one convention, I think he should always be scheduled earlier in the day. His "tibetan monk-talk"(tm) answers took too much work by the end of day 5'ish of a convention! *grin* (and I was told by some regulars, he was much more on-topic than normal) I bet he drives his students NUTS! *grin*

Having seen Marina Sirtis a couple of times (okay, 25 years between the two times. *grin*), I don't think she's ever said anything that wasn't tongue-in-cheek at a convention. So if she did say anything against DS9, I'd be willing to bet you missed the joke. (FWIW, I'm a TNG anti-fan) Were you mad about Shatner's participation in the infamous SNL skit?

Marina Sirtis has been known to call the show "Deep Sleep Nine", but always in a very tongue-in-cheek manner.

I've seen him at a couple of conventions and he seemed open enough to me.

Agreed. Plus the man is a College Professor with a MFA.

So? I just think that the guy is pretty much a ghost when it comes to talking about his TREK time to larger audiences (like TV). Again, it is his choice. But there are legions of fans who cant get to conventions who would like to hear from this man about Deep Space Nine..

But, then, based on what I have HEARD from Armin, he was aloof even when they were filming he show. In fact, some of the actors thought he, Avery, could have done a better job promoting their show...Armin has said this, and I believe I heard Nana Visitor beat-around-the-bush but agree in some degree with Armin...

At this year's Vegas convention, I found Brooks to be very commanding... in a quiet sort of way. At times you would really have to strain yourself to hear what he was saying.. and most of it was philosophical stuff. But he did sing.. and talk about Star Trek. He also gave out an award for a teacher of the year that used Star Trek to teach her lessons. It was actually quite impressive. When all Brooks was supposed to do was give her the award and send her on her way, he got her a chair, had her sit next to him while he read her entire entry into the contest. Believe me, no one associated from the convention was going to stop him and didnt even try. It was out of respect. I just remember thinking... Poor Alexander Siddig.. he has to follow this??? But he also did a great job!

Wait a minute...that's the smartest thing I've ever heard anyone say about anything!

And The Sisko rules. Do not question The Sisko.

It is well known that TV series in general mean long hours and high pressure for pretty much everyone involved. I would be surprised if any of the Trek regulars said it was easy work.
